Mira's field note: The Euclid Space Telescope, built to chart galaxies and probe dark energy, turned up its first comet while imaging a patch of sky toward Draco last month. The object, now catalogued as C/2026 S1, showed a faint coma in five separate frames taken between 16 and 24 September and was confirmed by the Minor Planet Center on 8 October. At roughly 800 million miles from the Sun, it is still far out and only beginning to brighten. The find arrived in data the spacecraft was never meant to collect.

Mira's field note: Researchers at Kansai Medical University have turned Raman spectroscopy on the RNA strands of twenty different SARS-CoV-2 variants and subvariants, from the original Japanese isolate through a dozen Omicron lineages. Each produces a distinct vibrational fingerprint that can be encoded as a unique barcode, revealing differences in molecular architecture that sequencing alone does not capture. The approach distinguished every strain in the set. The group is now exploring whether the same barcodes can flag newly emerging variants in a single measurement.

Mira's field note: Researchers at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center have traced elevated levels of a protein called Miro1 in the skeletal muscle of people with type 2 diabetes. In lab models, clearing the protein restored normal insulin response, and the same protein dropped after exercise in patients. The findings appear in a study released today. The next measurements will check whether blocking Miro1 in larger trials improves blood-sugar control without added drugs.
