The Most Powerful Thing You Bring Into the Room Isn’t Your Playlist
The Most Powerful Thing You Bring Into the Room Isn’t Your PlaylistIt’s your heart. What if the most impactful part of your teaching isn’t your sequencing, your cueing, or even your music—but the physiological state you bring into the room? In this episode, we explore the science of heart coherence and why your nervous system begins teaching long before you say your first word. Drawing from HeartMath research and practical experience as a yoga teacher, we’ll look at how coherent heart rhythms influence our own physiology, how they may affect the people around us, and why cultivating coherence may be one of the most important practices you develop as a teacher. What You’ll Learn What HeartMath means by heart coherence Why coherent and incoherent heart rhythms look different physiologically How the heart’s electromagnetic field differs from the brain’s What HeartMath research suggests about social coherence and physiological entrainment Why nervous systems respond to genuine regulation—not performed calm How coherence influences breathing, stress physiology, and cognitive function A step-by-step guide to practicing the Quick Coherence Technique Why your presence may be one of your most important teaching tools How to “leave it at the door” before stepping into the role of teacher Whether or not you use hands-on assists, this episode offers a practical framework for understanding how your own nervous system shapes the environment your students experience. Programming the Arc: Building Playlists as a Nervous System Tool
Programming the Arc: Building Playlists as a Nervous System Tool Have you ever noticed that some playlists seem to carry a yoga class effortlessly, while others never quite fit the room? It may have less to do with the songs themselves and more to do with how they’re sequenced. In this episode, we move from the science of music and the nervous system into practical application. You’ll learn how to build a playlist around the nervous system arc of a class so your music supports, rather than competes with, your sequencing. What You’ll Learn -Why tempo is more than atmosphere and how it influences movement and physiology -How to organize your playlist around the six phases of a yoga class -Why warming and cooling often share similar musical characteristics -How music can support the transition between sympathetic activation and parasympathetic recovery -Why volume, emotional tone, and musical complexity matter alongside tempo -A simple framework for creating reusable playlists that work across multiple classes If this lens resonates with your teaching, I invite you to subscribe to Nervous System Literacy for Yoga Teachers, where twice each month we explore the science of the nervous system through the lens of yoga. And if you’re ready to deepen your understanding of anatomy, consent, and hands-on assists, explore my courses, books, and resources at RubberBandMethod.com (http://RubberBandMethod.com). Somatic Tools in the Yoga Classroom
What if nearly everything you already do in a yoga classroom is working through the nervous system? In this episode, we zoom out and look at the yoga classroom as a complete somatic environment. From asana and sequencing to mantra, music, pranayama, and touch, each tool influences the body through sensation, rhythm, breath, and regulation. This conversation explores how yoga practices shape autonomic state, deepen embodiment, and help students inhabit their bodies more fully — often long before the thinking mind catches up. What You’ll Learn: -What “somatic” actually means in a yoga context -Why asana itself is a nervous system intervention -How sequencing can train both sympathetic and parasympathetic responses -The physiological effects of inversions, breath-linked movement, and savasana -How mantra and chanting may support vagal activation -Why music profoundly shapes the energetic tone of a room -How pranayama regulates the autonomic nervous system -Why touch may be one of the most direct somatic tools available to yoga teachers -How assists can deepen proprioception, embodiment, and body awareness -Why yoga classrooms are already spaces of nervous system regulation This episode is part of the Nervous System Literacy for Yoga Teachers series. The Stress Continuum: Why Stress Isn’t the Enemy You Think It Is
Stress has become one of the most misunderstood words in modern wellness culture. We talk about it as something to eliminate, avoid, or manage away entirely. But what if stress itself isn’t the problem? In this episode, we explore stress as a continuum — from the kinds of stress that build resilience and expand capacity, to the kinds that overwhelm the nervous system and leave lasting imprints. We’ll look at how the body adapts to challenge, what trauma actually is from a nervous system perspective, and why understanding this spectrum fundamentally changes the way we approach yoga, healing, consent, and hands-on work. This is the final essay in the foundational Nervous System Literacy series for yoga teachers, and the most personal one yet. You’ll learn: -Why stress is not inherently harmful -The difference between eustress, hormetic stress, trauma, PTSD, and CPTSD -How appropriate stress builds resilience and autonomic flexibility -What the “window of tolerance” is and how it expands over time -Why nervous system regulation depends on training both sympathetic and parasympathetic capacity -How trauma develops when stress exceeds the nervous system’s ability to process and recover -The distinction between trauma and PTSD -What Post-Traumatic Growth is and why it matters -How yoga functions as a powerful nervous system regulation tool -Why consent, agency, and autonomy are essential in yoga spaces -How hands-on assists can either support regulation or increase stress depending on how they’re offered -Why widening the window of tolerance may be one of the deepest aims of yoga practice itself If this conversation resonated with you and you want to explore how these principles translate into anatomy-informed, consent-centered hands-on teaching, I’d love to invite you deeper into the Rubber Band Method®. Afferent and Efferent Fibers: How the Brain and Body Talk to Each Other
What if the body is doing more of the talking than the brain? In this episode, we explore afferent and efferent signaling—the bidirectional communication pathways that allow the brain and body to constantly exchange information—and why this changes the way we understand yoga, nervous system regulation, and embodied practice. You’ll learn: -The difference between afferent and efferent fibers -Why the nervous system is not purely top-down -How the vagus nerve carries predominantly body-to-brain information -Why the gut, skin, breath, and muscles are constantly “reporting” to the brain -The difference between bottom-up and top-down regulation -Why yoga works even when students cannot cognitively “think” themselves into calm -How cues, breathwork, touch, and sequencing influence the nervous system through afferent pathways This episode also explores the emerging science behind body-based regulation, including the work of Stephen Porges, Bessel van der Kolk, Peter Levine, and HeartMath’s research on heart-brain communication. For yoga teachers, this reframes the role of practice itself. Every cue, every breath, every transition, and every moment of contact becomes part of an ongoing conversation between body and brain. The body has always been talking. This episode is about learning how to listen. Heart Rate Variability: The Nervous System Has Something to Say
Heart rate variability — or HRV — has become one of the most talked-about metrics in wellness spaces, yet few people fully understand what it measures or how to interpret it meaningfully. In this episode, we unpack what HRV actually is, why it matters, and how yoga practices may influence the nervous system flexibility it reflects over time. We explore the relationship between HRV, the autonomic nervous system, vagal tone, breath, stress, recovery, and nervous system resilience — all through the lens of yoga teaching and embodied practice. What You’ll Learn - What HRV actually measures — and why variation in the heart is healthy - How the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems influence HRV - Why the vagus nerve and breath play such a central role in nervous system regulation - Why your HRV baseline is deeply individual and shaped by many factors - How yoga, pranayama, meditation, and recovery practices may support HRV over time - Why trends matter more than single readings when tracking HRV - How this framework can deepen the way yoga teachers understand sequencing, breathwork, and nervous system support This is the seventh post in a foundational series on nervous system literacy for yoga teachers. If this lens resonates with your teaching, I invite you to subscribe to Nervous System Literacy for Yoga Teachers on Substack. Polyvagal Theory: A More Nuanced Map of Safety and Threat
Polyvagal theory offers a more nuanced map of how the nervous system organizes around safety and threat. In this episode, we explore the two pathways of the vagus nerve, the three-state hierarchy of the autonomic nervous system, and the concept of neuroception. For yoga teachers, this is not just theory. It’s a lens for understanding what’s happening in your students in real time, and how your voice, sequencing, and presence shape the nervous system experience of your class. What you’ll learn: - How to recognize the difference between connection, activation, and shutdown in your students - How the ventral and dorsal vagal pathways relate to safety, engagement, and withdrawal in a yoga setting - Why students can have completely different nervous system responses to the same class - How subtle cues like your tone of voice, pacing, and presence influence a student’s sense of safety - How to structure your class to support a shift from activation into genuine regulation - Why stillness and savasana cannot be forced, and what actually helps the body settle - How this framework can deepen your ability to “read the room” and respond more intentionally as a teacher If this lens resonates with your teaching, I invite you to subscribe to Nervous System Literacy for Yoga Teachers on Substack. The Parasympathetic Nervous System: Not the Hero, the Moderator
The parasympathetic nervous system is often positioned as the goal—rest, relax, downregulate. But that framing is incomplete. In this episode, we re-examine the parasympathetic branch not as the hero, but as a moderator working in dynamic balance with sympathetic activation. Through the lens of anatomy, neurochemistry, and applied practice, this episode offers a more precise understanding of how the nervous system actually functions—and what that means for how you teach. What you’ll learn: • Why “rest and digest” is only a partial picture of the parasympathetic system • How breath, sound, and vocalization influence vagal activity and regulation • The role of acetylcholine in heart rate, cognition, and digestion • How the gut and brain communicate—and why it matters for mood and stress • What happens at the extreme end of parasympathetic activation • What nervous system flexibility actually means in a yoga context • How your sequencing, pacing, and use of touch shape regulation in the room The goal isn’t calm. It’s flexibility. If this lens resonates with your teaching, I invite you to subscribe to Nervous System Literacy for Yoga Teachers on Substack. You’ll receive new essays — and their related podcast — delivered directly to your inbox twice a month, so you don’t have to go searching for them. The HPA Axis: When the Alarm Won't Turn Off
The HPA Axis: When the Alarm Won’t Turn OffUnderstanding the body’s slow-burn stress system In this episode, we move beyond the fast-acting sympathetic response and into the body’s longer-lasting stress system: the HPA axis. You’ll learn how this hormonal cascade shapes energy, mood, sleep, and recovery—and why chronic stress can linger in the body long after a moment has passed. What you’ll learn in this episode: What the HPA axis is and how it works (hypothalamus → pituitary → adrenal) Why cortisol is not the enemy—and the essential role it plays in daily function How the cortisol awakening response and diurnal rhythm support energy and focus What happens when stress becomes chronic and the feedback loop breaks down How long-term stress affects sleep, inflammation, memory, and mood Why some students feel wired and exhausted at the same time What chronic stress patterns can look like in a yoga classroom How yoga can support stress regulation over time, without positioning it as a quick fix This episode is part of a foundational series on nervous system literacy for yoga teachers—bridging science, lived experience, and practical application in the classroom. The Sympathetic Nervous System: Your Body’s Accelerator
Episode 3 — The Sympathetic Nervous System: Your Body’s AcceleratorWhy Fight or Flight Is Only Part of the Story The sympathetic nervous system is often blamed for stress, anxiety, and burnout. But that story is incomplete. In reality, the sympathetic nervous system is the body’s activation system — the branch that mobilizes energy, sharpens attention, and prepares us to engage with challenge, movement, and life itself. In this episode, we look beyond the simple “fight or flight” narrative and explore what sympathetic activation actually does in the body. In this episode, you’ll learn: • Why “fight or flight” only captures a small part of what the sympathetic nervous system actually does • How sympathetic activation mobilizes energy for movement, challenge, and engagement • The key physiological changes that occur during activation — including heart rate, breathing, blood flow, and digestion • The roles of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and cortisol in the body’s stress response • Why sympathetic activation in your students is not failure — it’s physiology doing its job Understanding the sympathetic nervous system helps yoga teachers interpret what they see in the room with more clarity and less judgment. Yoga becomes powerful not by eliminating activation, but by helping the body learn how to move through activation and return to balance. The Autonomic Nervous System: Your Invisible Co-Teacher
Episode #2The Autonomic Nervous System: Your Invisible Co-TeacherWhat’s actually running the room when you’re running the room Yoga teachers often interpret student behavior through the lens of effort or attitude. But much of what we see on the mat is actually the nervous system doing exactly what it’s designed to do. In this episode, we explore the autonomic nervous system (ANS) — the system that regulates heart rate, breathing, digestion, and stress responses — and why understanding it can change how we interpret what’s happening in a yoga class. Students arrive carrying an autonomic state shaped by their day, their stress load, and sometimes patterns built over years. Understanding this framework gives teachers a clearer, more compassionate lens for what’s unfolding in the room. In this episode• What the autonomic nervous system is • The sympathetic and parasympathetic branches • Why these systems are never simply “on” or “off” • The difference between homeostasis and allostasis • Why nervous system flexibility — not constant calm — is the real marker of health Subscribe to Nervous System Literacy for Yoga Teachers on Substack to receive new essays and podcast episodes twice per month. Welcome to Nervous System Literacy for Yoga Teachers
What if the yoga classroom isn’t just a room full of bodies — but a room full of nervous systems? In this opening episode, Kiara Armstrong shares the lived experience that led to the creation of Nervous System Literacy for Yoga Teachers. After years of navigating severe dysregulation and misdiagnosed Complex PTSD, Kiara began studying the nervous system from the inside out — learning to track regulation and dysregulation through thought patterns, sleep, illness, energy, and behavior. What began as a personal healing journey became a lens through which she now understands yoga spaces. This episode introduces the foundation of the podcast: nervous system literacy. Rather than presenting techniques or instruction, this conversation sets the stage for the work ahead — exploring how regulation and dysregulation shape what happens in yoga classrooms and why understanding the stress continuum changes the way we teach. Future episodes will explore the science, philosophy, and real-world application of nervous system literacy in yoga spaces. If you’re a yoga teacher who believes yoga heals — and wants to understand how and why, this space is for you. Welcome. Let’s begin. About Kiara Kiara Armstrong is a yoga teacher, massage therapist, somatic practitioner, and founder of Rubber Band Method® — an anatomy-informed, consent-centered methodology for hands-on assists and adjustments in yoga. Her book, Hands-On Yoga Assists, was published by Human Kinetics in 2025. Learn more at:www.rubberbandmethod.com (http://www.rubberbandmethod.com) This is a public episode. Why Yoga Works (And Why That Matters for Teachers)
Why does yoga regulate the nervous system — and why should teachers understand the biology behind it? In this introductory episode, I share the vision behind Nervous System Literacy for Yoga Teachers — a space where anatomy, physiology, somatics, and research meet the lived reality of teaching in a yoga classroom. We’ll explore the autonomic nervous system, vagal tone, co-regulation, consent, and hands-on touch — alongside the ways classical yoga philosophy often mirrors what modern science now measures. If you teach yoga and want to understand not just that yoga works, but how and why it works at the level of the nervous system, this podcast is for you. New episodes release twice monthly.
