Protecting your Fleet from Distracted Driving
We all know distracted driving is a serious issue and that it has an immeasurable impact on road safety. Each year, thousands of lives are lost and countless more are injured due to drivers being distracted by their phones, eating while driving, or other behaviors behind the wheel. In April during Distracted Driving Awareness Month, it's a great time to remember that we all have an obligation to ensure we drive as safely as possible every time we get behind the wheel. But fleet operators have an even greater duty to ensure their drivers are not driving distracted- because they face liability issues and legal challenges if they don't have strong policies and standards that address the issue with their drivers. The Road to Distraction: Distracted Driving and Reducing the Risk
In "The Road to Distraction", we delve into the serious issue of distracted driving and its impact on road safety. Each year, thousands of lives are lost and countless more are injured due to drivers being distracted by their phones, eating while driving, or other distractions behind the wheel. As April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, it is a time to regroup and take responsibility for the choices we make on the road. As drivers, we need to be cognizant of the fact that our only job is to drive. The American Automobile Association (AAA) has estimated that 1 in 5 traffic fatalities in the US involves driver fatigue and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has determined that fatigue is the probable cause of 40% of recent highway crash investigations, alarming statistics that should concern anyone on the road. What started as research into oil and gas industry fatalities specifically, Kyla Hagan-Haynes discovered so many of these fatalities were due to driver fatigue crashes, which are fully preventable when we understand the effects and impacts of fatigue on the safety of fleet drivers and take actions to mitigate this driver risk. With more than 20 years experience in public health and 12 years in the space of occupational motor vehicle safety space, Kyla's passion is now applying both her analysis and the oil and gas industry best practices across other industries that could also benefit from driver fatigue management.
