[…] An AAN review published in Neurology examined consumer wearables in epilepsy, headache, sleep disorders, and stroke risk, and concluded that they should be generally viewed as adjuncts to clinical evaluation rather than substitutes for it. The distinction between wellness and medical devices is important. Some devices have FDA-cleared functions, while others, such as the Oura Ring, are marketed as wellness products even clear devices have limitations in the apple heart study for example an irregular pulse notification had an 84 positive predictive value for atrial fibrillation but an absence of an alert did not exclude afib consumer sleep data can be even trickier one study of the aura ring found 94 sensitivity for detecting sleep but only about 73 specificity for detecting wakefulness our experts say wearables have real potential in neurology particularly for seizure detection and potentially monitoring treatment response in Parkinson's disease.
