Creative Director: You need boundaries before you burn-out

In this episode of the Never Think Alone podcast, host Kyle sits down with South African multi-hyphenate creator, creative director, and former comedian Donovan Goliath. From his early days growing up in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape to studying at PE Technikon and navigating the gruelling hours of Johannesburg's top advertising agencies, Donovan’s unconventional path is a masterclass in creative evolution. He opens up about why he left the safety of the agency world to chase the terrifying, addictive thrill of stand-up comedy, and why he eventually walked away from the stage during the COVID-19 pandemic to prioritise his role as a father. Donovan also delivers a passionate defence of analog creativity, explaining why he strictly uses pen and paper for brainstorming, why he imposes extreme constraints on his production gear, and why he believes the current hype around AI is creating a generation of "sparkly but hollow" content. 00:00 - Intro02:13 - The Identity Crisis of a Multi-Hyphenate 04:36 - Escaping the Agency Conveyor Belt12:20 - The Addiction & Fear of Stand-Up Comedy 27:38 - Where True Inspiration Comes From38:44 - The "Pen & Paper" Story-First Method 45:00 - The Power of Creative Constraints52:54 - Fatherhood & The Stopwatch Technique1:15:00 - Brand Ethics & Saying No1:25:49 - The Worst Advice He Ever Received 1:32:20 - Why AI is Killing Creative Texture 1:48:39 - Advice on Purpose Key TakeawaysEmbrace the Meandering Path: Donovan’s success stems from blending diverse skills from his graphic design roots and agency art direction to his time in an Eastern Cape rap group and his commanding stage presence as a comedian. Seek Inspiration Outside the Algorithm: To avoid creating derivative, trend-chasing content, creatives should study the "OGs" and pre-internet masters. Cult classics like the movie La Haine, documentaries like Jiro Dreams of Sushi, and architecture provide richer foundational ideas than scrolling social media. Steal Like an Artist: Originality comes from combining elements from multiple diverse sources. Taking a specific use of colour from one artist and a stroke technique from another creates a completely unique output. Story Always Beats Spectacle: Content creation is ultimately a fight against the audience's thumb. High production value and AI-generated gloss cannot save a concept that lacks a compelling, relatable story at its core. Protect Your Time and Values: As a freelancer and creator, Donovan filters potential collaborations through a strict checklist. If an opportunity risks disrupting his family time or clashes with his principles—like his refusal to promote gambling—it is an immediate "no," regardless of the budget. Define Your Purpose Through Service: Drawing on advice from Jim Carrey, Donovan urges young professionals to stop floating aimlessly and ask themselves: "What do they need that your talent can provide?".Donovan Goliath is a South African creative director, storyteller, and former stand-up comedian. Originally from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, he began his career in graphic design and above-the-line advertising before transitioning into a highly successful comedy career. Today, he operates as a self-described "collectible" and modern-day Renaissance man, utilising a wide array of analog techniques to build deeply resonant, story-driven digital campaigns for major brands

Creative Advisor: If you over-adapt, you’ll die

Why are modern creative agencies burning out their best talent while producing forgettable, commoditised work? In this episode of Never Think Alone, legend of South African advertising and founder of consultancy Number 10, Ahmed Till, breaks down the systemic decay of corporate creative environments. From dealing with boardroom imposter syndrome at 54 to walking away from 25% of agency revenue on principle, Ahmed reveals the exact psychological conditions required to build world-class work. This conversation dives deep into the realities of corporate code-switching, the trap of "playing not to lose," and why AI will ultimately save creative strategy by slaughtering the illusion of commoditised work. Key Topics Covered: Why you cannot unleash human imagination until your team feels safe to be themselves. Navigating post-1994 corporate environments, identity suppression, and boardroom imposter syndrome. Why hard work doesn't drain creative talent, but killed, unreleased work destroys human energy. How agencies surrendered their value by appeasing client logic instead of pushing productive friction. Why generative AI is simply "WordArt on steroids" and why human taste and judgment are the ultimate moats. Why hourly rate cards reward bloat and penalise strategic genius. Rebuilding high-performing creative environments around Love, Respect, and Fun. 0:00 - Introduction 2:40 - The Hidden Cost of Code-Switching: Identity suppression and insecurity 6:14 - The Process as a Laboratory: Iterative experimentation over formulas 10:53 - Identity & Diversity: Moving to authentic cultural exchange 16:54 - Innovation Demands Friction: Why over-adaptability kills ideas 20:36 - The Best Practice Trap: High-risk vs. low-risk positioning 32:38 - Building High-Performing Cultures: Love, Respect, and Fun 43:30 - The Time Heist: Corporate bureaucracy vs. cognitive space 48:02 - Reinventing Business Models: Value-based pricing and royalties 54:18 - The "Number 10" Framework: Strategic vision and market gaps 1:03:57 - Playing to Win vs. Playing Not to Lose: Overcoming category sameness 1:18:21 - The True Benchmark of Principles: Firing toxic clients 1:29:49 - AI as the New "WordArt": Human taste as the ultimate moat 1:45:46 - Executive Accountability: Leadership ownership in the automated era

AI Scientist: 60% of your industry is about to disappear!

This is for anyone who wants to understand how to build better systems, unlearn self limiting beliefs, and adapt to a rapidly shifting world.Key Takeaways:Current AI is based on deep learning, which is just pattern matching and correlation at scale, not true cause and effect understanding. To make computers faster in the 80s and 90s, computer scientists broke the laws of traditional mathematics by rounding off numbers, sacrificing accuracy for speed, which is why AI gives inconsistent answers today. AI is currently optimized for aging populations in the Northern Hemisphere that need automated labor, not for continents like Africa with booming, young populations that need employment. The advertising industry could shrink by 60%, making true, differentiated human creativity an incredibly expensive and highly sought after commodity. Just like Roger Bannister breaking the four minute mile, the limits we face in society and business are often collective mental blocks that we have the power to remove. Edzai Zvobwo, an AI scientist, mathematician, and author of Mathematics for Disruption, joined me on the Never Think Alone podcast to unpack the future of artificial intelligence and the creative industry. Edzai was born in Zimbabwe, started his career as a maths teacher, and now tackles some of the most complex systemic problems in the tech and creative spaces. We explored why current AI models are essentially trapped in a digital version of Plato's Cave, projecting an interpretation of reality without ever experiencing it. Edzai revealed the historical rounding errors in computer science that actually cause AI to hallucinate today. We also touched on a massive blind spot in global tech: why AI built to solve Northern Hemisphere workforce shortages does not serve the unemployment realities of the Global South. Finally, we looked at the incoming disruption to the advertising and marketing industry. Edzai predicts a conservative 60% retraction in the industry, which means the remaining human creativity will become as rare and valuable as a handmade Rolls Royce.Timestamps:00:00:00 Intro and growing up in Zimbabwe 00:02:22 Judea Pearl and the power of causal AI 00:06:10 Why deep learning is just correlation at scale 00:07:27 Plato's Allegory of the Cave and AI's lack of reality 00:13:16 Why data is inconsequential without understanding the process 00:17:18 How capitalism and VC funding chose scale over true intelligence 00:22:01 The mathematical rounding error causing AI hallucinations 00:30:33 Why AI is failing the Global South 00:43:24 The fear of AI replacing creative strategists 01:02:14 Predicting a 60% retraction in the advertising industry 01:13:00 The Roger Bannister effect and overcoming collective limits 01:19:35 First principles thinking Kim Kardashian vs the Catholic Church

Brand Strategist: "with chaos comes opportunity"

What happens when you strip away the safe corporate jargon used to justify boardroom choices? In this episode of Never Think Alone, host Kyle Fraser sits down with Ivan Moroke, the former CEO of Kantar South Africa and current Chairperson of Heartlines. Ivan breaks down the direct friction between human reality and corporate execution, explaining why the language businesses use everyday actually damages their ability to connect with the market. The conversation bypasses traditional management theory to address the actual psychology of leadership under pressure. Ivan introduces a concept he calls the power of and, challenging the common belief that organizations must choose between commercial success and human empathy. From managing restructuring and layoffs with integrity to tackling the systemic impact of fatherlessness through the Fathers Matter campaign, this conversation provides a raw look at what it costs to lead with authenticity. Key Themes Addressed Why prioritizing people is a daily psychological battle against our natural self serving tendencies. How to navigate complex choices where two correct institutional goals collide, using the operational lessons of the pandemic. Why terms like target market and consumer create a dangerous psychological distance between a brand and its actual community. Why true strategic intuition cannot be taught in a lecture and must be extracted from professional failure. Why South Africa's history makes it a unique global testing ground for genuine organizational diversity and inclusion. 00:00- 01:05 - Introduction to Leadership and Chaos 01:05- 04:10 - People-First Principles and leadership 04:10- 07:35 - The Power of "And" 07:35- 14:00 - Mentorship and Learning from Icons 14:00- 23:45 - Vulnerability in Leadership 23:45- 28:20 - The Language of Marketing 28:20- 37:05 - Adapting to Change 37:05- 43:40 -The Fathers Matter Campaign 43:40- 52:50 - Perspectives on South Africa 52:50- 58:05 - Lessons for the Next Generation 58:05- 1:06:00 - Family and Lived Experience 1:06:00- 1:09:30 - Embracing Failure (The Scar) 1:09:30- 1:19:56 - Final Thoughts and Outro Follow Never Think Alone if you want access Tools, Tribes and Techniques to increase your own value through creativity. Multi-awarded designer: Please never call yourself a designer

"Clients don't buy your creativity. That is a total illusion. They buy your ability to solve a high-stakes commercial problem." In this raw, and deeply moving conversation, host Kyle Fraser sits down with the undisputed icon of design and brand growth, Nathan Reddy. As the visionary founder of Grid Worldwide, Nathan has spent over three decades engineering the visual and psychological landscape of modern corporate commerce, from historic democratic elections to multi-million-dollar global powerhouses. This is a psychological evaluation of survival, corporate ego, and the terrifying necessity of systematically destroying your own wins to stay alive. From his roots as a kid hustling on the streets to survive, to standing at the absolute peak of industry influence, Nathan exposes the unvarnished machinery of creative leadership under pressure. He breaks down why he explicitly bans his entire team from reading design reference books, how a young professional walked into his office at age 27 and demanded to buy the agency (and became a partner instead), and how a former company driver rose to become the Co-CEO.. This conversation serves as an urgent strategy manual for entrepreneurs, operators, and creators looking to build a bulletproof legacy in an automated world. Key Takeaways This is a masterclass in psychological governance, how to control ego as your identity, and desire as execution fuel, without letting them destroy your sanity. Why clients never buy raw creativity, they buy your capacity to slice through chaos, read human insights, and fix abstract business crises. Why analyzing your competitors guarantees copycat mediocrity, and why philosophy is the ultimate engine for forecasting future consumer behavior. How Nathan uses radical micro-routines including eating the exact same four meals every week to completely de-clutter his mind for high stakes decision making. The real, unvarnished stories of how choosing human character, moral fiber, and desperate hunger over spreadsheets built a multi-million-dollar empire. Why elite positioning requires you to bill clients for where to strike to fix the crisis, rather than the length of time it takes to strike. How to maximise modern generative tools as fast editing engines while preserving the irreplaceable human blood and substance in your craft.
