And then how do enslaved people resist enslavers power there? And as you insinuated there, Matt, I come across pretty clearly on the side of the state that the power that enslavers have, they get their power from the state. And it's a central theme of the book there that without the imperial states in the region propping up, enslavers, without imperial states in the region giving power to enslavers or disciplining, using violence on the bodies of enslaved people, you're going to be an enslaver for very long there.
