Psalm 133 paints a vivid picture of what life in Christian community is meant to look like: good, pleasant, and overflowing with blessing. Using two powerful images, anointing oil and mountain dew, the psalm describes how God pours out abundance when His people dwell together in genuine unity. The greatest obstacle to that unity is our own self-centered desires, whether good desires we demand from others instead of God, or desires that are simply out of bounds. The good news is that Jesus came with a 'you first' heart to cure our 'me first' hearts. Christian community is not optional, and neither is the blessing that flows from it. God commands that blessing, and it is available to us now, in the middle of ordinary, sometimes messy, community life.

Israel's exile was the result of bloodshed, injustice, and idolatry, sins that defiled the land and profaned God's name among the nations. Yet God's commitment to restore His people was never based on their merit. It was rooted entirely in the honor of His name and His grace toward those who carried it. Idolatry is just as present today as it was in ancient Israel, showing up in misplaced devotion and in the man-made versions of God we construct in our own minds. When we reduce God to only one or two of His attributes, we create an idol and slander His name. God's jealousy is not petty. It is a selfless, altruistic concern for our well-being. To bear the name of Christ is one of the greatest privileges imaginable, and it calls us to examine our devotion and live accordingly.

Jesus Christ is not just another king with a limited title. He is the supreme King of all creation, and yet He willingly died as a criminal for His people. His crucifixion outside the city walls was not a defeat but a deliberate act of love, fulfilling Scripture and making His people holy. The sign Pilate placed above the cross declared a truth he did not fully understand: Jesus truly is King. Even in His most helpless moments on the cross, God was fully in control. His love was not vague or general but specific, personal, and all-consuming. That love is meant to reorient everything about the way we live. The cross calls us away from living for ourselves and toward living fully for Christ and others.
