And people who've toyed in game engines have seen materials, which are basically a collection of textures filtered through a shader applied to a mesh. And so when you think of something in a video game, you look at a 3D object, you think of, oh, what's the bitmap that wraps around this object? It's actually not what's happening. There's a number of bitmaps that are all mapped to that geometry. then there's another piece of code that tells what the screen is actually looking at. So you're not ever, even though the upshot is often very frequently just I'm looking at the base color texture and that's mostly what it does look like. […]
