Spijt van de keuze om twee kinderen uit het buitenland te adopteren heeft Annemieke Figee nooit gehad. Wel hebben de vele kritische geluiden in de samenleving haar aan het denken gezet: hadden we destijds voldoende oog voor de mogelijke schaduwkanten van buitenlandse adoptie? Samen met journalist Maarten Dallinga deed Annemieke een jaar lang onderzoek naar de vraag in hoeverre buitenlandse adoptie werkelijk in het belang is van het kind, en wat het antwoord voor haar als adoptiemoeder betekent.
