A late-night radio call-in show for people who work nights, written for English learners at B1-B2. Every episode: one caller, one strange story told in clear everyday English, then After the Line, where Iris and Owen go back through the recording and pull out six expressions you can use tomorrow, a five-word tour and three sentences to shadow. Every episode has a free lesson page at nightcallsenglish.com with the full transcript, the expressions with examples, the word tour, the shadowing lines and a short test. All of season one is out now, and season two is coming soon.
An ordinary night, a week after the lights came back. Ray has had heartburn since dinner, his arm has ached all week, and he says it's the chair. At sixteen minutes past one he stops in the middle of a sentence. The microphone is still on, and the whole county hears what happens next.

The Stranger Nobody Could Thank
The second night without power. One by one, people who have never met call to describe the same stranger. He helped each of them with something that could not wait, he said Ray's own sentence, and he was gone before anybody could thank him. Nobody knows who he is. Then somebody sees him again, right now.

The Night the Roof Came Off
A storm takes the roofs off half of Norwick in one hour. When it stops, Ruth goes to check on her grandson and finds the sky where his ceiling was, and no Eli. He is seven. He has not said a word since August, so he will not answer when she calls. It is eighteen degrees.

The Night the Producer Had to Do the Talking
Ray drove three hours to keep the promise he made on air last week, and the road back is shut. So the producer does the program. Nadia solves the night's mystery in twelve minutes, the caller tells her he wanted the hour instead, and she is left with forty minutes, one microphone and nothing prepared.

Four days before Christmas, fifteen degrees and dropping, something scratches at Vera's front door at half past twelve. It's an old gray dog in a coat, and the phone number on his collar is the number of the house she moved into six weeks ago. Every official way of finding his family leads back to her hallway. That leaves one way.

Stay Awake, Lena
The first snow of the year closes the road north. At twenty past one a nine-year-old girl calls the first-time line from a car that has gone off the bridge at mile forty. Her mom won't wake up properly, the phone is on six percent, and she is very, very sleepy. Ray has forty minutes and a town full of people who are awake.
