[…] We burn in the spring and in the fall for numerous years. And we choose places that are rich in cultural resources. Every year we have to burn a place that has basket materials because they're only good for a season. So if our weavers, which I'm a weaver, or to have good basket materials, then we need to burn every year. So we have two materials that are fire dependent. And then we have some different overlay materials for the color in our basket designs. And some of those grow in creek areas, the wet places. But what's happening in all of those 100 years with the absence of fire and the increase in vegetation growth is that the wet places are losing their water content because all of the trees and the brush are sucking the water up and away from those wet areas.
