Rev. Delman Coates is a graduate of Morehouse College (B.A. in Religion, 1995), Harvard Divinity School (Master of Divinity, 1998), and Columbia University (Master of Philosophy in Religion, 2002; Ph.D. in New Testament & Early Christianity, 2006). Since February 2004, Dr. Coates has served as the Senior Pastor of Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton, MD. In 15 years, the congregation has grown to approximately 10,500 members, adding over 9,000 new disciples. Dr. Coates has led the church in initiating and revitalizing ministries, doubling the church's ministry campus and land holdings, incorporating the Mt. Ennon Development Corporation and impacting the community in Prince George's County, Maryland. Under Dr. Coates’ leadership, the church has engaged in media advocacy and healthcare reform advocacy. In October 2009, Outreach Magazine named Mt. Ennon as one of the 100 Fastest Growing Congregations in the U.S. Pastor Coates founded the Our Money Campaign, an economic justice campaign that seeks to solve some of our nation’s greatest social and economic challenges, which celebrated its official launch in May 2019. He also founded the Black Church Center for Justice & Equality. Coates is a board member of the National Action Network, as well as a member of the Society of Biblical Literature, the Morehouse College Board of Preachers, and the NAACP. In 2008, TAAP honored him as one of the "20 To Watch." In 2012, “The Root” named Dr. Coates as one of their 100 African American achievers and influencers. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) honored Dr. Coates in 2013 for his commitment to advancing civil rights and liberties for all. The same year, Ebony magazine selected him as one of their “Power 100.” Coates’ ministry, messages, and social activism span a variety of media platforms. He has appeared on, and been profiled in national media such as MSNBC, CNN, Fox News, Fox Soul, Essence Magazine, NPR, VH1, The New York Times, The Washington Post, & Huffington Post, and is featured in the documentary, The New Black. Dr. Coates is the proud father of four children: one son, Nathaniel and three daughters, Jasmine and twin daughters, Ava Marie and Leah Blair.

Stressed, But Not Stressed Out

Stress is real, and most of us know what it feels like to carry too much for too long. It can settle into our thoughts, drain our energy, aﬀect our bodies, and leave our spirits feeling tired and thin. Sometimes stress shows up loudly, and sometimes it hides behind a smile, a busy schedule, or the simple eﬀort to keep going. In Ezekiel’s vision of the dry bones, we see a powerful reminder that even what looks empty, scattered, and beyond repair is still within God’s reach. God is not afraid of our dry places, our overwhelmed places, or the parts of us that feel worn down by life. God meets us there with hope, breath, and new life, and that means stress does not have to be the end of our story.

The Answer is Still "Yes"

There are seasons when life feels like a valley of dry bones. We look around and see loss, disappointment, injustice, and deep weariness, and it can feel like hope has dried up right in front of us. Sometimes that valley shows up in our personal lives, in broken dreams, strained relationships, or battles we thought would be over by now. Sometimes it shows up in our communities, where people carry the weight of inequity, grief, and uncertainty every single day. In Ezekiel 37, God meets Ezekiel in that very kind of place, a place marked by despair, and asks him to face what seems impossible. Yet that is where God reveals a powerful truth for all of us: what looks dead is not beyond God’s power. God still speaks into barren places, God still breathes life into what has gone silent, and God is still able to restore what we thought was gone for good. That is good news for weary hearts, and it is a reminder that even in the valley, God’s answer is still yes.

I'm Starting With the Man in the Mirror

In 1988, Michael Jackson released the iconic song “Man in the Mirror.” It tells the story of someone who grows tired of turning a blind eye to the world’s suﬀering. He realizes that looking out the window at everyone else’s problems is not enough. To make a real diﬀerence, he has to start with the person he sees in the mirror. This powerful shift from observation to conviction is a profound spiritual truth. If we want to see transformation in our lives and in the world, we cannot just point fingers. We must begin with self-examination. Jesus tells a similar story about a young man who had to look in the mirror. After squandering his inheritance in a distant land, the prodigal son hits rock bottom. It is only when he is broke, alone, and humbled that the Bible says, “he came to himself.” In that moment of clarity, he saw the gap between who he had become and who he was created to be. This story is not just an ancient parable; it is a picture of our own capacity to lose our way. But more importantly, it is a powerful reminder that no matter how far we have gone, we can always turn around and come home.
