Dr. Lynn Sheets, the CAP at Children's Wisconsin, had done groundbreaking work on sentinel injuries, seemingly minor injuries in infants that are shown to be precursors to more serious abuse. John had learned from Sheets directly that it was dangerous to ignore bruising on an infant if the parent's story didn't make sense. And John's story had some holes. The explanation he gives for the bruises is quite honestly something that matches the mechanism for the bruises. He says he panics after he notices that he was sleeping on top of the child. […]
