Tartanilya: May Tingog Pa Ba?
The bustling street of Leon Kilat reveals a parade of chariots or tartanilyas that was first recorded to appear in the 1850s. With Cebu City's assimilation to modernize public utility vehicles, allegations of being an image of animal cruelty, and with the onslaught of the global health pandemic, the popularity of these historical pieces of Cebu's transportation heritage is placed on the verge of its feared demise. In another eye-opening episode of Normalite Speaks, lend your ears to Jane as she unfolds the tartanilya's history, the reasons behind its downhill popularity, and the coachman's drawbacks in pursuing a less sought after job. Sinsilyo
SINSILYO. In its common dictionary definition, it is a flat, typically round piece of metal but to our indigenous brothers and sisters, particularly the Badjaos, it is more than its physical aspects. It is their most prized possession that keeps them going, striving, and fighting in the face of modern-day deprivation and ethnic persecution. So, in this episode of Normalite Speaks, open not just your ears but also your hearts as we tell you more about the real-life misery of the Badjaos as they hunt for coins not underwater but on the noisy, traffic-filled, and dangerous highway of the town of Consolacion, accompanied by their cheery rhythms and whimsical chants. Furthermore, pay attention to how professionals, governments, and non-governmental organizations are dealing with their current situations in order to provide the inclusivity and recognition they truly deserve.
