What’s the difference between a boundary, an expectation, and something that just annoys the hell out of you? We’re talking context-free Teams messages, unnecessary meetings, surprise calendar invites, “we’re a family” workplaces, unexpected phone calls, flexible schedules, and the coworkers who somehow turn their emergency into everyone’s emergency.
Then we translate some classic corporate language: “circle back,” “gentle reminder,” “per my last email,” “that’s an interesting perspective,” and more. Because sometimes being direct would save all of us a LOT of overthinking.
But underneath the workplace icks is a bigger question: How many “rules” at work have we created for ourselves and then expected everyone else to magically know?

We’re pretty good at talking about how to set boundaries—but are we just as good at respecting other people’s boundaries without trying to manage them?
This week, Maddie and Meaghan revisit one of their favorite workplace topics from a different angle: what happens when caring about a coworker turns into assuming what they can handle, protecting them from stress they never asked us to protect them from, or even making decisions on their behalf?
From burnout and workload to lunch breaks, leaving work on time, passive-aggressive reactions, manager-employee relationships, and the baggage we carry from previous workplaces, we’re unpacking the messy reality of boundaries at work.
Because sometimes respecting someone means trusting them to tell you what they need—even when their boundary isn’t the one you would choose.
