[…] Now, the Fed has a policy of just passively supplying whatever currency gets demanded. So that really kind of gets set off to the side. The bank reserves, which are now about $7 trillion are controlled by the Fed. But the rest of it, which is 80 % is controlled by the Treasury and the Congress. And that's because let me make sure we're all getting it. That's because how much there is outstanding and Treasuries is simply a function of how much the government needs to borrow to keep itself running. Which then in turn depends on taxes and spending. And so the bottom line there is that if you want to think about inflation and what drives the price level, which is inflation is just the rate of change in that price level for the economy, you can't get around thinking about fiscal policy.
