S4:E2 - Pericles with Dr Erin Julian

It's finally time for PERICLES, PRINCE OF TYRE!! This is a high-seas adventure ranging across the eastern Mediterranean, featuring not one, but two big storms, *actual pirates with actual lines*, and a young woman so aggressively virginal that she drives business away from her local brothel. In other words, perfect for the festive season. Our special guest for this episode is Dr Erin Julian. Erin is a researcher whose work focuses on marginalised communities in early modern archives, thinking about how what’s lost and found in the archives shapes historical narratives on and off the stage. She was part of the Engendering the Stage and Diverse Alarums projects. Her current project looks at women's and children's dramatic performances, singing, and organ playing in recusant and royalist communities.Erin has also been requesting a Pericles episode since we started this podcast, so we're thrilled that she was available to be our guest host for this very special episode!Gaza Soup Kitchen donation link: https://gazasoupkitchen.org/donate-now/

S4:E1 - The Duchess of Malfi

Season 4 kicks off with Webster's dark (literally) Jacobean horror, THE DUCHESS OF MALFI. One of the few early seventeenth-century tragedies to remain popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, this alt-canon staple features creative poisoning methods, medicinal apricots, and lycanthropy (aka werewolf disease) -- but the heart of the story is a woman who knows what she wants out of life and is punished for going out and getting it Content note: The Duchess of Malfi depicts, and this episode discusses, a number of traumatic subjects, including: gaslighting; murder (including of children) by poison, strangulation, and stabbing; hidden pregnancies; suggestion of incestuous feelings; mental health crisis (lycanthropy)

We now have a (free) patreon, come join us at https://www.patreon.com/NAShakespearePodcast
