Bonus: Our Thoughts on the Holiness Standards Debate (Mayo vs. Beets)

Do you have to follow Holiness standards in order to go to heaven (no makeup, no women's pants, etc.)? That's the position that Holiness evangelist, Luke Beets, defended during his recent debate with Nathan Mayo—cofounder of Berean Holiness.

In this follow-up conversation, Nathan and Natalie reflect on the debate, share their top three takeaways, review Nathan’s arguments to see how they fared, and discuss nearly every controversial moment—unforgivable sin, Isaiah 3 (jewelry), antinomianism, sinless perfection, why some people define Holiness Movements as cults, and more!

If you didn't already listen to the debate, check it out on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

Special thanks to The Every Day Christian Podcast for hosting and moderating the debate!

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek." —Romans 1:16

Questions or thoughts? Debate: Holiness Standards—Do They Distort a Biblical Understandings of the Gospel?

Will you lose your salvation if you don't follow Holiness standards (standards forbidding makeup, jewelry, women's pants, etc.)? Are all Christians who don't follow Holiness standards actually lost?

Nathan Mayo (cofounder of Berean Holiness) argues that, no, Holiness standards are not gospel issues, and that elevating them to this level distorts a biblical understanding of the gospel. Luke Beets (Holiness evangelist) disagrees, claiming that Holiness standards are clear, biblical commands, that not following them is sin, and that all sin results in immediate loss of salvation (until specifically repented of).

Thank you so much to The Every Day Christian Podcast for all their work hosting, moderating, and editing, and for making this debate possible!

For a deeper study of these topics, check out Nathan's articles:

https://bereanholiness.com/can-women-wear-pants/

https://bereanholiness.com/jewelry-on-trial/

https://bereanholiness.com/can-godly-women-use-cosmetics/

https://bereanholiness.com/identifying-gospel-distortions/

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek." —Romans 1:16

Questions or thoughts? 11. “What Does it Look Like to Root Our Identity in Christ Rather than a Church Group?” with Jonah McElhaney

Have you ever caught yourself identifying more with your church group then with Christ? Did you experience an identity crisis after transitioning out of a high-control church or movement?

In our final podcast episode of Not Ashamed Season #1, we dive into the topic of untangling group identity and learning to place our identity in Christ first and foremost.

Our guest is Jonah McElhaney, author of There's No Such Thing As Dragons: Examining The Theology of The United Pentecostal Church.
