Rethinking Resistance: Empathy, Openness, and Leading Through Change

Today on Notable Leaders Radio, I sit down with Travis Hahler, change management expert, author, and neuroscience practitioner, whose journey into leadership began not in a big-city boardroom, but in a small Midwestern town of 1,500 people. Early on, influential teachers taught him that anything was achievable with determination, and Travis learned to see his roots not as a limitation, but as an asset that helped him build fluid skills and adaptability. From managing large retail teams early on to consulting across hundreds of organizations, his passion for people naturally led him to explore the intersection of empathy, neuroscience, and organizational change. In This Episode, We Discuss: View Resistance as Information, Not Opposition Resistance during organizational change isn't something to be snuffed out; it's a natural brain response that signals missing needs. Drawing on his degree in neuroscience and neuropsychology, Travis explains how understanding the brain's reaction to change helps leaders diagnose what their people need and guide them through transformation effectively. Establish Guardrails Around Empathy Leading with empathy makes people feel seen and valued, but without proper boundaries, leaders risk taking on emotional burdens that aren't theirs to carry. Travis shares how he learned to "close the loop" on empathy—listening deeply, addressing what he can within his sphere, and letting go of the need to fix everything. Remain Open to Unexpected Career Side Roads Being overly rigid about a singular career path often blinds leaders to incredible peripheral opportunities. Travis explains how stepping outside his initial focus on retail led him to consulting, opening doors to learn from hundreds of organizations and build a vast portfolio of expertise. A Final Reflection The moment we shift from pushing through resistance to understanding what it is trying to teach us is the moment real progress begins. With empathy, an open mind, and a commitment to people-first leadership, we can navigate any season of change and turn unexpected challenges into lasting transformation. Carry This Forward Notice Where in your life or leadership are you rigidly pushing down a single path when an unexpected "side road" might offer a better outcome? Reflect What resistance are you currently encountering in your team or yourself, and what information might that resistance be revealing about unmet needs? Act What is one guardrail you can establish this week to practice empathy without carrying emotional burdens that aren't yours to solve? HAHLER, Founder of The Neurological Nomad, transforms how Fortune 500 companies navigate change by revealing a startling truth: Resistance isn't rebellion—it's biology. As Senior Director of Global Strategy and Transformation at Salesforce and Founder of The Neurological Nomad, Hahler brings an unprecedented fusion of neuroscience and business acumen to organizational transformation. His unique journey, from conducting EEG research in Denmark to studying neuropsychology at Harvard, earning an MBA, and leading change at Google, Salesforce, and others, makes him a transformation expert who can explain why your amygdala sabotages your strategic plan and why you can blame everything on your basal ganglia. Over fifteen years, Hahler has guided more than one hundred companies through successful transformations, earning him the nickname Resistance Fortune Teller for his uncanny ability to predict where change efforts will fail. Rethink Resistance reflects Hahler's ongoing mission to democratize neuroscience for business leaders, helping them remove ego and embrace neuroscience to lead transformational change. Beyond Proving Yourself

Today on Notable Leaders Radio, I sit down with Shannon Fernando-Rubera, a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, TEDx speaker, global humanitarian, and Founder & CEO of Alabaster International. Early in her career, Shannon felt the familiar pressure to prove her competence and earn credibility in every room she entered. But after witnessing the devastating impact of famine in Kenya, her perspective shifted fundamentally. Choosing mission over recognition, she challenged traditional models of humanitarian aid by stepping into remote, conflict-affected regions to co-create sustainable, community-led solutions alongside Indigenous families. Her bold leadership led to the historic first-ever introduction and harvest of Ethiopia's indigenous Enset crop in Kenya, an evidence-based model now helping more than 12,000 farmers strengthen food security and overcome chronic hunger. Throughout our conversation, Shannon shares how shifting from self-proof to purpose clarified her path, why true solutions require proximity and active listening, and how embracing uncertainty allows leaders to disrupt unjust systems and create lasting impact. In This Episode, We Discuss Disrupt Systems, Not People Indigenous and marginalized communities are not helpless victims; they are resilient survivors who have endured long before aid arrives. Shannon highlights that true humanitarian disruption isn't about altering the people being served, but disrupting the unjust systems and barriers that prevent them from accessing vital resources. We Can't Do This Work Alone Impactful leadership is rooted in relationship and interdependence. Shannon reflects on how learning to embrace her need for others - donors, beneficiaries, local partners, and teams - has been the ultimate gift and honor of her 15-year journey. Proximity is More Valuable Than Assumptions Expertise alone does not create lasting impact. Shannon emphasizes that the communities closest to the problem are closest to the solution. Effective leadership requires bringing skills instead of rigid scripts, using both ears to listen first, building trust, and co-creating solutions with local leaders rather than imposing external answers. A Final Reflection Leadership is not about having all the answers or being the smartest person in the room; it is about creating space for others to lead and having the courage to serve a purpose greater than yourself. When we step into proximity, listen deeply, and embrace uncertainty, we stop trying to prove who we are and start becoming the leaders our communities truly need. Carry This Forward Notice: Where in your career or life are you operating out of a need to prove your competence rather than serving a deeper mission or purpose? Reflect: Are you approaching challenges with prewritten "scripts" and assumptions, or are you stepping into proximity and actively listening to those closest to the problem? Act: What is one faithful step you can take today toward a goal or calling, even in the face of incomplete information and uncertainty? Rising from the Ashes: Relationships, Resilience, and the Power of Persistence

Today on Notable Leaders Radio, I sit down with Noemi Beres, Co-Founder of Podcast Connections and a master organizer who helps entrepreneurs land high-quality podcast interviews to build authority and grow their businesses. Growing up as an only child in a small town in Hungary, Noemi learned early on from her parents that hard work, persistence, and consistency are the real drivers of success. After starting her career in Denmark and Ireland, she made the bold leap into entrepreneurship in 2007 despite having no formal background in sales or marketing. When personal tragedy struck in 2019, followed by the loss of her business during the 2020 pandemic, Noemi chose to push forward, rebuilding her life and launching a thriving podcast booking agency from scratch. Throughout our conversation, Noemi shares why relationships must always come before results, how leaning into art helped her navigate profound grief, and why every leader needs a "just keep going" mindset. In This Episode, We Discuss Pivot Through Crisis with Unshakable Resilience When sudden loss or market disruptions threaten your livelihood, forward momentum becomes essential. Noemi opens up about losing her father, grandmother, and business in rapid succession during 2019 and 2020, and how choosing action over dwelling on the past allowed her to rise from the ashes. Prioritize Relationships Over Results True business growth happens when you lead with heart and generosity. As an active member of the Go-Giver community, Noemi explains how building genuine, trust-based connections creates far more meaningful impact than chasing quick transactions. Embrace Storytelling and Authentic Guesting Great podcasting relies on presence, vulnerability, and active listening. Noemi breaks down what makes an extraordinary podcast guest, highlighting how sharing real human stories creates a ripple effect that helps listeners feel seen, understood, and inspired. Build Your Life on Hard Work and Consistency Success is rarely an overnight phenomenon. Noemi reflects on how her parents instilled a strong work ethic in her from an early age, demonstrating that persistent effort and daily showing up ultimately unlock long-term achievements. A Final Reflection Our circumstances may shape our story, but they don't have to determine the ending. The moment we choose to keep moving forward despite fear, tragedy, or uncertainty is the moment we step back into our own power. With persistence, genuine kindness, and a commitment to serving others, we can rebuild from any setback, cultivate deep connections, and turn our greatest challenges into lasting impact. Carry This Forward Notice What story or past setback are you holding onto that might be keeping you from taking your next step forward? Reflect Where in your business or personal life can you shift your focus from seeking results to building genuine, heart-centered relationships? Act What is one small, consistent action you will take before tomorrow to keep moving toward your goals, regardless of current challenges?
