NPC Member/Author Describes History of Hood-Winking in Presidential Politics
The news that Air Force One was used as a decoy in July to protect President Donald Trump from a possible assassination attempt may have sounded like something out of a political thriller. But the tactic has several precedents in American political history. Long before AI, deepfakes and social media made it possible to create convincing imposters, impersonators could fool voters in a decidedly low-tech way—as lookalikes on whistle-stop campaign trains. In this episode of Update-1, NPC member Edward Segal talks with Broadcast Podcast Co-Chair Mike Hempen about how deception was effectively used and cites many surprising examples. Segal is the author of “Whistle-Stop Politics: Campaign Trains and the Reporters Who Covered Them,” which traces 185 years of presidential campaign-train history. Hosted on Ausha. NPC Photo Exhibit Participant Talks About His Work And The Craft
The 27th annual NPC photo exhibit on display in the Club's lobby through Sept. 30 is a celebration of visual storytelling. In this edition of Update-1, Broadcast/Podcast Team co-chair Adam Konowe speaks with participant and veteran photographer Ken Hawkins about his five featured photos, as well as his experiences dating back to Jimmy Carter's rise from obscurity to the presidency. The exhibit's theme is “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” inspired by the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. About three-quarters of the images are thematic, showing Americans and others exercising these inalienable rights, as well as expressing their personal values of family, community, country and faith. Hosted on Ausha. See ausha.co/privacy-policy for more information.
