Podcast Overview

Family medicine is the foundation of the health care system. But the system itself is in bad health - it needs to be changed from the bottom up.   You are frustrated, overworked, and overwhelmed. Many patients cannot access adequate, timely primary care. As a result, health declines, and spending skyrockets. This podcast is dedicated to addressing your plight and showing you how to rethink your role and make changes that will restore your love of the practice of family medicine. In turn, your patients will have great access to you. They will be heard and well cared for. Real change happens from the bottom up. This means doctors and patients behave differently in primary care, starting with your MINDSET.   Foundational Mindset: you are different and special Your training and practice as a generalist means you are unique in the healthcare system You are the only physician who cares for the whole person over time You are the only physician who is accountable for 85% of the care a patient needs or more Your relationship with the patient is the cornerstone of health and healthcare Direct Primary Care: the answer you’ve been looking for Working directly for your patients changes everything. Patients (or employers) with DPC pay a modest monthly fee for unlimited primary care, and insurance is not used. When a third party does not pay you, required administrative tasks decline dramatically, freeing up your time for patient care and restoring your autonomy.  With much less need for administrative staff and expensive software to facilitate billing and other third-party requirements, practice overhead may be halved. A DPC provides the same income for a patient panel that’s much smaller.  Patient access improves dramatically, and you have time to care for patients and nurture relationships properly. When family medicine is allowed to fulfill the tenets of primary care in a DPC model, benefits accrue far beyond primary care: Less use of expensive downstream care (emergency department, urgent care, hospital, specialist visits) Lower cost for labs, imaging, and prescription medications Patients receive exceptional care at all levels, as the DPC doctor is their advocate and quarterback and helps them navigate the system should care be needed downstream Better patient health due to improved access and the stronger doctor-patient relationship Frustration, burnout, and overwhelm among family physicians are all but eliminated This podcast is dedicated to restoring you and your profession to the proper role, so you enjoy being a physician and serving your patients at the highest possible level - and doing it with Direct Primary Care.

Episode 5: Busting DPC Myths

We bust the myth that DPC only benefits healthy and wealthy patients. My survey of DPC patients reveals that DPC works great for all sorts of patients, even those with chronic conditions and many health concerns, even low-income patients, uninsured patients, and those from underserved communities or geographic areas. DPC patients are just as varied as patients of traditional insurance-based primary care practices. All sorts of people are poorly served by "the health care system" and are seeking something better. Many of them are finding DPC and love it. We also talk about a fabulous article about one physician's journey to DPC. Dr Emily Silverman covers all of the questions you're asking yourself about DPC as you start to consider making the leap. She learns that DPC allows you to decide how you want to practice, how you're most interested in helping your community; it's practice autonomy and business autonomy. It's the way to become the doctor you dream of being, taking care of patients the way they are clamoring for and the way that has so much meaning and fulfillment for you. Your patients deserve it. You deserve it. Now that you know that DPC is great for all sort of patients, now that you know that working directly for patients by kicking middlemen out of your practice is the key to loving being a doctor, what's stopping you?

Episode 4: Investing in DIRECT Primary Care

It seems like everybody says we need to "invest" more in primary care in this country. Certainly, most PCPs are suffering terribly in networks and other insurance-based structures in our so-called "health care system." They are suffering burnout, frustration and moral injury at epidemic levels. To alleviate PCP suffering and take much better care of patients, do we simply need to pay doctors more in the current structures? We can't fix our broken "system" with the same thinking that created it! DIRECT primary care does not take our broken status quo system as a given. Because DPC rethinks the role of insurance, it works! DPC is the antidote for so much physician and patient suffering and other poor results when insurance is used to pay for primary care. DPC is where we should "invest" our health care reform efforts.

Episode 3: Direct Primary Care - it's a Profession

Primary care is unique in all of healthcare – it’s a PROFESSION, not just another specialty. Embracing your unique value is the key to figuring out how to escape everything you’re burned out and frustrated about. The structures around you don’t let you care for your patients the way you both deserve. Third party payers and networks bring more negatives than positives to primary care delivery. The structure of a Direct Primary Care membership model allows you to be the primary care doc you yearn to be, with time and availability for patients so you can build a trusting relationship and care for the whole person over time. Hear what DPC docs say about how they practice and how rewarding it is. Take the first steps toward reimagining your primary care practice and nurturing your heart.
