As Oberlin UMC begins looking ahead to its 150th anniversary celebration (Oct, 2027), this week's message pairs the Passover instructions in Exodus 12 with Jesus' teaching on reconciliation in Matthew 18 — two passages about a community preparing to move forward together, not looking back. The sermon explores what it means to remember faithfully without getting stuck in nostalgia, and how healthy community isn't the absence of conflict but the presence of grace in the middle of it.

Take Off Your Shoes, Pick Up Your Cross
When Moses stumbled onto a bush that burned without being consumed, an ordinary day tending sheep became a holy encounter with God. In this message, Pastor G explores Exodus 3:1-15 alongside Matthew 16, where Jesus tells his disciples the hard truth about what following him will cost. From Moses' hesitant "who am I?" to Peter's rebuke of Jesus, we see how easily we shrink from God's call when it asks more of us than we expected.
Pastor G challenges us to recognize that holy ground isn't confined to a sanctuary — it's our homes, workplaces, classrooms, and everyday conversations. Discipleship isn't about admiring Jesus from a distance; it's about following him into the ordinary, inconvenient, and sometimes costly moments where his love becomes visible through us.

What We Worship Shapes What We Become - The God Who Sets Us Free
Everybody worships something. Even the folks who'd swear they don't.
Pastor G opens this week with a question that's easy to answer wrong: what actually has your heart? Not what you'd say on a Sunday morning, but what you trust when things get shaky — where you look for security, for hope, for control. He works through the first commandment, but he starts somewhere you might not expect: not with the "shall not," but with the grace that comes before it. Before Israel is ever told what to do, God reminds them they're already free.
From there it gets personal — the things we let quietly take God's place without ever meaning to.
"What we worship shapes who we become," he says. And that's the whole sermon in one line.
Wherever you're listening from today, this one's worth sitting with.
