[…] His answer was to prefabricate large portions of the structure on land, float them into position, and sink or secure them onto carefully selected areas of the seabed. Two main designs were created, one for the Royal Navy and another for the British Army. The naval forts were enormous concrete and steel structures consisting of two cylindrical reinforced concrete towers joined by a platform above them. Each pair of towers rested upon a massive concrete pontoon. During deployment, the entire fort was towed into the estuary and positioned over a sand bank. The pontoon was then flooded, causing the structure to sink and settle onto the seabed. […]
