50 jaar Universiteit Maastricht, een podcast van Observant – Hoe het ‘exotische’ probleemgestuurd onderwijs het visitekaartje werd van Maastricht
Wat zou Maastricht zijn zonder pgo, het probleemgestuurd onderwijs? Vijftig jaar geleden werd het onderwijsconcept omarmd bij de oprichting van de Rijksuniversiteit Limburg (RL). En nog altijd houdt dat stand, zij het met pieken en dalen. “De omloopsnelheid van zo’n onderwijsvernieuwing is meestal 30 jaar, ik denk dat Maastricht wel een bijzonder geval is.” Met dank aan onderwijsvernieuwers Wynand Wijnen en Henk Schmidt. Die laatste stapte begin jaren zeventig de universiteit binnen en zou een drijvende kracht blijken achter pgo. “Het was 1974, ik startte samen met de eerste groep studenten en het onderwijs aan de RL, dat maakte een buitengewoon exotische indruk op mij. Waar waren de colleges?” Aanvankelijk ging pgo door het leven als probleem-georiënteerd leren, pas in 1980 kwam de omslag. “Je kunt alles probleem-georiënteerd noemen, maar het idee dat leren gestuurd wordt door een probleem, dat het daarmee start, dat heb ik geïntroduceerd, en dat sloeg aan.” En nog altijd laat de UM zich erop voorstaan, al piept en kraakt het weleens, weet ook Oscar van den Wijngaard, medewerker onderwijsontwikkeling bij het Edlab. “Een goeie pgo-cursus maken is veel moeilijker dan het schrijven van een collegereeks." HIj ziet dat er onder studenten en docenten nog altijd behoefte aan is. “Maar denk na over andere vormen, wil je altijd puur blijven vasthouden aan die zevensprong, aan de basis? Daar moet je je als universiteit ook over buigen.” Schmidt: “Ik denk dat Maastricht een bijzonder geval is, het is verrassend dat wat hier gebeurt, nog steeds leeft na al die tijd.”

50 jaar Universiteit Maastricht, een podcast van Observant - Hoe 'doordouwer' Sjeng Kremers de universiteit op de kaart zette
Ter gelegenheid van het vijftigjarig jubileum van de Universiteit Maastricht (UM), maakt Observant een serie podcasts waarin we terugblikken op het verleden, kijken naar het heden, pieken en dalen de revue laten passeren en voorzichtig vooruitkijken naar de toekomst. In deze eerste aflevering een kleine zoektocht naar het tafeltje waaraan koningin Juliana plaatsnam in 1976 om de oprichtingsoorkonde te ondertekenen en een gesprek met Sjeng Kremers, gouverneur (commissaris van de koningin) in Limburg van 1977 tot 1990. Hij kwam naar het zuiden toen de Rijksuniversiteit Limburg - zoals de UM toen nog heette - nog maar net het levenslicht had gezien en ontfermde zich er direct vol overtuiging over. Mede ingegeven door de opdracht om de werkgelegenheid aan te zwengelen na de sluiting van de mijnen. En daarin speelde de onderwijsinstelling ook een belangrijke rol. “Ik heb de universiteit gesteund tot in Den Haag.”

Observant podcast, episode 8: exploring digital boundaries and capturing the virtual flag
What’s allowed — and what isn’t — when you break into a computer system? Is ethical hacking possible? And how far can you go in exploring the digital boundaries? These are some of the questions a group of about ninety students of Maastricht University has been tackling since this year. They’ve come together to form MaaSec, currently the only Dutch chapter under the banner of the ACM, the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society. Since its founding, MaaSec has been making waves: the group was nominated for the UM Student Prize 2025 and has been excelling in so-called Capture the Flag competitions, says Andrei Vişoiu, a third-year bachelor's student of Computer Science and one of the driving forces behind MaaSec. “We want students to stay curious and creative when it comes to cybersecurity and computer science. Explore what’s possible, but always stay within the boundaries of what’s possible and allowed.”
