About Oda Nobunaga: The Warlord Who Unified Japan — Fexingo History
Oda Nobunaga, the 'Demon King' of Japan’s Sengoku period, was a revolutionary warlord who shattered the old order and laid the groundwork for a unified Japan. Between 1534 and 1582, Nobunaga rose from a minor daimyo in Owari Province to the most powerful military leader in the archipelago, crushing rival clans like the Imagawa, Takeda, and Mori, and breaking the political and military power of the Buddhist warrior-monks of Mount Hiei and the Ikko-ikki. His innovations—the use of massed arquebusiers at the Battle of Nagashino (1575), the construction of the magnificent Azuchi Castle, and his patronage of the tea ceremony and Christianity—transformed Japanese warfare, architecture, and culture. But Nobunaga’s brutal methods, including his burning of temples and slaughter of opponents, earned him both fear and hatred. In 1582, betrayed by his general Akechi Mitsuhide at Honno-ji Temple, Nobunaga’s death set the stage for Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu to complete his mission. Join hosts Lucas and Luna as they dissect the life, legacy, and contradictions of the man who began Japan’s unification, exploring how his ambition, military genius, and ruthless pragmatism still echo in modern Japan’s identity.

While earlier episodes have covered Nobunaga’s economic reforms, spy networks, and battles like Nagashino, this episode zooms in on the very first contact between his war machine and European firearms. We explore how the arrival of the Nanban binbo—the Southern Barbarian merchants—changed Japanese warfare forever. Lucas and Luna trace the journey of the first matchlock guns to Tanegashima and then to Nobunaga’s hands, examining how he transformed these chaotic trade items into a disciplined military asset. You’ll hear about the specific tactics used at the Battle of Kizugawaguchi, where naval firepower decided a land campaign, and how Nobunaga’s obsession with speed and volume outpaced his rivals. The conversation also touches on the cultural friction of the Tenshō Kenbutsu period, where Catholic missionaries walked alongside ashigaru soldiers, creating a strange alliance of faith and gunpowder. From the Portuguese carracks docking in Kyushu to the standardized tenshō koban coins funding these wars, we uncover how global trade built a local empire.

Nobunaga's Radical Art of War
While earlier episodes explored Nobunaga’s economic reforms and military logistics, this episode examines his profound influence on Japanese aesthetics and the concept of bugei ryōdo—the ideal of mastery in both martial arts and culture. We trace how Nobunaga used tea ceremonies not merely as social gatherings, but as high-stakes political arenas to assert dominance over rival daimyos. The conversation details his patronage of Sen no Rikyu, his destruction of traditional artistic institutions like the Kano school, and his embrace of wabi-sabi simplicity as a reflection of his own ruthless pragmatism. Listeners will discover how Nobunaga’s personal tastes reshaped the tea bowl, the garden, and the very definition of power in the Sengoku period, turning cultural refinement into a weapon of statecraft.
