   Relaxing for God

   I am not yet good at rest and relaxation. But I have learned what it feels like to rest and relax, and I'm all for it.    Bulletproof Confidence Like Jesus

   Jesus was the perfect man. It's right that we look to the way he lived is life to see not just "What Would Jesus Do" theoretically, but what did he actually say, do, and feel literally. And what gave him the bulletproof confidence to say, do, and feel the way he did. It's too easy to dismiss this question by saying, "He is God. Of course he's confident." His life is perfect human life. He experienced irritation, anger, joy, temptation, gladness, confusion just like we do. But he never lived his life in the flesh, always in the power of the Holy Spirit. (Luke 4:1, 14) -We have access to the same Holy Spirit that empowered Jesus to live an emotionally holy life even around emotionally unholy people. -We can expect that by submitting to the Holy Spirit and not walking in the flesh we will be empowered to experience self-control and not unholy emotions. -As we grow in Christlikeness in our emotions, we may see our godly life spur on the people we love towards the same godliness empowered by the Holy Spirit. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/brian-bowman/message

   Healing Your Anxious Home

   I use the wallpaper on my phone to remind me of 2 anxious statements that happen in my heart quite often. 1. How dare you put me in this situation! 2. Oh no, what are they gonna do when I tell them the truth. When I feel one of those statements giving me anxiety and stealing my courage I know I need to be more like Jesus. Jesus seemed to ride the waves of other people's anxiety with such skill. To be like more Jesus you’ll need to develop a high threshold for the emotional pain of people you love. Consider the story of Jesus being interrupted by Peter and the disciples who demand that he come back to town because everyone is looking for him. 1. People need to be healed 2. Peter says they’re all looking for Jesus 3. So… Jesus has a problem. He wants to go to the next town, but it’ll disappoint Peter and the disciples as well as a whole town of sick people. He doesn’t get caught in this trap. 3. I will preach in the next town because that’s my objective 2. Peter says they are all looking for me 1.     My Friend Wants Me To Warn Him of Evil

    Praying: For the Sin of My Friends

    This is a tough one. Part of my real, off duty life is being grieved for the sins of other people. So often I'll just go for a long walk and pray. I pray about my own sins. I pray for wisdom and courage. And I ask God just to make me a good pastor. I have learned that you can't take responsibility for the way people live their lives, but it's also true that when people are wise or foolish it affects everyone that cares about them.     Reading: Proverbs 10 (on Workaholism, Laziness, and Money)

    What about work, money, workaholism, and laziness? Solomon takes over the writing in Proverbs 10 and begins by telling us that people are counting on you to trust God to provide for you, but not to use God's faithfulness at an excuse for laziness. Laziness is wickedness. Some people work in wicked ways and then wonder why they can never get ahead. Proverbs 10:1–5 1 The proverbs of Solomon. My counselors recommended this book and I found it really helpful. It's a small booklet that covers: 1. Manifestations of Pride 2. Manifestations of Humility 3.     Reading Proverbs 8

    Reading Proverbs 8 to Brooke I started to think about how "Wisdom" says that she is together with Prudence, Knowledge, and Discretion almost like they are all best friends who hang out together. And that they all hate Evil, Pride, Arrogance, and Perverted Speech. I found it surprising that Proverbs 8 casts wisdom as the opposite of, or at least opposed to, evil... not just foolishness. Proverbs 8:1–16 1 Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice? 2 On the heights beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; 3 beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud: 4 “To you, O men, I call, and my cry is to the children of man. 5 O simple ones, learn prudence; O fools, learn sense. 6 Hear, for I will speak noble things, and from my lips will come what is right, 7 for my mouth will utter truth; wickedness is an abomination to my lips. 8 All the words of my mouth are righteous; there is nothing twisted or crooked in them. 9 They are all straight to him who understands, and right to those who find knowledge. 10 Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold, 11 for wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her. 12 “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and I find knowledge and discretion. 13 The fear of the LORD is hatred of evil.     Reading Proverbs 9

    Reading Proverbs 9 we see that Wisdom has now built a house and prepared a dinner. And just like in the New Testament, people are invited into the house for the dinner who would otherwise not belong there. But the fools who are invited to this dinner are going to have to decide who their real friends are.
