Ep. 38: He Wrestled on a BROKEN LEG for Two Weeks?!

From wrestling on a BROKEN LEG to stepping onto the sets of independent horror films, Clifton Taylor has one hell of a story to tell! 🤯 This week on Off The Shelf Podcast, Jordan and Clint sit down with actor and former professional wrestler Clifton Taylor, known in the wrestling world as Apex, for an unfiltered conversation about chasing dreams, overcoming adversity, and finding a new home in horror. Clifton opens up about his difficult childhood, how Hulk Hogan and classic horror movies helped him escape reality, and how professional wrestling gave him an opportunity to reinvent himself. We're talking devastating wrestling injuries, training for TWO WEEKS on a broken leg, nearly losing his life to sepsis, and making the difficult decision to step away from the ring. But that's only the beginning. Clifton takes us behind the scenes of his transition into independent horror, including his experiences with Friday the 13th fan films, Neon Fear, Blood Loss, The Red Huntress, and Trash's Revenge, a project connected to the Return of the Living Dead universe. We also dive into Sick and Twisted Tales, where Clifton plays Victor Mortis alongside previous Off The Shelf guest Amber Brooke as Valerie Mortis. He shares how their characters came together, their on-screen chemistry, and the possibility of bringing them back for future projects. Plus, we get into his horror memorabilia collection, the impact Hulk Hogan had on his life, the sacrifices his family has made, and why he believes it's never too late to bet on yourself. Ep. 37: Comeback Story: SCARS Magazine Is Back From the Dead — Here’s What Happened

SCARS Magazine is back — but the story behind it is even crazier than we expected. This week on Off The Shelf Podcast, Jordan and Clint sit down with SCARS Magazine editor Raymond Dowaliby for a completely unfiltered conversation about the rise, disappearance, and resurrection of one of indie horror’s underground magazines. Ray takes us all the way back to where it started — including the unexpected job that helped teach him the production and design skills that eventually led to SCARS. We get into his early experiences with horror, meeting legends like George Romero and Stephen King, handing the first issue of SCARS directly to celebrities at conventions, and what it was like building a horror publication before social media became what it is today. We also talk about SCARS giving early coverage to creators like James Gunn, Matt Reeves, Darren Lynn Bousman and others, why Ray has always had a soft spot for independent filmmakers and artists, what eventually caused him to step away from the magazine, and why he now calls its return “the resurrection.” Plus: lost issues, MySpace, Hatchet, Tony Todd, the realities of magazine distribution, the future of SCARS, and why Ray still believes the weird, independent and overlooked creators deserve a place to be seen. If you love horror, independent film, collecting, underground culture, or hearing the stories behind the people who helped build the scene, this one is for you. 💀 CONNECT WITH SCARS MAGAZINE Official Website: scarsmag.com Instagram: @ScarsMag Buy/Read SCARS Magazine: MagCloud — SCARS Magazine SCARS is an independently published magazine covering alternative and horror film, music and culture, with issues on MagCloud dating back to 2009. Its 2024 return was described as a resurrection after a roughly 10-year hiatus.

Ep. 36: They Said His Horror Series Would Be CRAP… Then It Hit #1?! | Jason Hough

What happens when people tell you your indie horror project is going to be crap… and it ends up hitting #1? On this episode of Off The Shelf Podcast, Jordan and Clint sit down with filmmaker Jason Huff of Kord Productions to talk about the realities of building movies outside the traditional Hollywood system. Jason takes us through his journey from working in IT to writing, directing, producing, shooting and editing his own projects—and the setbacks that nearly made him walk away from filmmaking entirely. We get into the story behind Snow, the creation of Kord Productions, developing Infinity Girls, and the wild road that eventually led to Devil’s Dancers. Devil’s Dancers originally started as a small horror project that Jason planned to burn onto DVDs and sell at conventions. Jason shares how people told him that producing it so quickly would result in something terrible—but according to Jason, the series went on to accumulate 152 awards and remained #1 on Bloodstream for 15 straight days. Jason also opens up about surviving a devastating hurricane, losing his home, dealing with failed projects and investors, reaching the point where he told his wife he was finished with filmmaking—and what happened when she convinced him to give it one more shot. We also dive into: • Building Kord Productions and creating opportunities for new talent • Practical effects and making ambitious projects on indie budgets • The origins and world of Devil’s Dancers • The influence of filmmaker Robert Hall • Turning Detective Rose Thorne from an idea into a much larger project • Handling criticism and learning from bad reviews • The business side of independent filmmaking • Jason’s massive movie memorabilia and horror collection • Robert Englund, George Romero, Stan Lee, Clive Barker, John Carpenter, Eli Roth and more • Jason’s dream movie prop • What’s coming next from Jason and Kord Productions If you're into independent horror, filmmaking, practical effects, movie collecting, horror memorabilia or creators building outside the Hollywood system, this conversation is for you.
