   EP 11 - His vs Hers - The Complete OffGrid Camping Packing List

   Ever wanted to understand the thought processes of His vs Hers when it comes to packing for an offgrid camping trip? We thought we’d throw the challenge out there to our Marketing Manager, Sam Moorehouse and Podcast Host, Melissa J Scott, both avid campers and both pretty convinced that their way is the right way when it comes to packing for the ultimate camping experience! The importance of having the right gear cannot be overstated and in the latest episode of the OFFGRID DOWNUNDER podcast and video series, it was both enlightening and pretty amusing to see the stark contrast between Sam’s and Melissa’s packing lists. It turns out, when it comes to camping, men and women might just have different priorities – and we’re guessing this plays out in every household around the country right before it’s time to go away on a big trip! At MDC we are big supporters of the Big Red Bash held on the outskirts of the Simpson Desert, Birdsville, and we thought we’d ask Melissa and Sam to share with us the absolute essentials on what to bring… Sam’s List: Practicality at Its Best Sam, ever the pragmatist and boy scout, has his sights set on ensuring that no mechanical hiccup can ruin the adventure. His list reads like a survival manual and his approach ensures that no breakdown, puncture, or electrical failure will stand in the way of a good time! Melissa’s List: Comfort and Convenience On the other hand, Melissa’s list is all about maximising the comfort you already are experiencing in an MDC caravan or camper, and ensuring an even more pleasant experience amidst the freezing cold nights and beautiful warm winter days in the desert. Her approach to car preparation is to ensure the car is serviced before you go, and being a member of the RACQ/NRMA or equivalent!  And being able to reach them on her portable satellite dish if out of mobile range! So who’s list is better?! Ultimately, both lists highlight really important aspects of a successful off-grid camping trip. Sam’s practical tools and spare parts are indispensable for tackling unexpected challenges, ensuring safety, and providing peace of mind. Meanwhile, Melissa’s focus is more on comfort items that ensures the camping experience is enjoyable and relaxing, allowing campers to stay connected, in touch with family/friends/workplace and comfortable! What Melissa and Sam both stressed was the importance of bringing enough water (even more important that fuel if you have to choose), firewood in case you can’t access it naturally, and something to light it with.    EP 10 – Entrepreneurial Journey: From Market Direct to MDC Campers and Caravans - Vaughan Hindley

   “When you can afford it, get people into your business that are good at doing things that you're not good at doing, or things that you don't want to do. For instance, I don't want anything to do with accounting. So, I have good accountants in my business that take care of all that work. Where I want to play is product development and marketing. That's my space. And, you know, be good to the team. Take the team on the journey.” Vaughan Hindley Owner of MDC Campers and Caravans In this episode of the OFFGRID DOWNUNDER podcast and video series, we delve deeper into the entrepreneurial journey of Vaughan Hindley, the owner of MDC Campers and Caravans. We chatted with Vaughan a little while ago and people were so keen to hear more from him, that we invited him back to revisit the evolution of MDC, and to learn more about the man himself and hear about his entrepreneurial journey. The Birth of MDC Campers and Caravans: Vaughan’s journey began with a diverse range of products under the Market Direct brand. From importing solar lights to selling Pee Wee motorcycles, go-karts, and agricultural equipment, Vaughan explored various markets. The breakthrough came with camper trailer tents, which were offered at a price significantly lower than the market average – when the industry was charging $12K for a camper trailer, Vaughan was bringing it to market at $5K! The industry embraced the price difference, and this success marked the shift of Market Direct's focus entirely to camper trailers. A Passion for Camping and Caravanning: Vaughan's affinity for the camping industry stems from his personal background. Growing up from humble beginnings, camping and fishing were regular family activities. These outdoor adventures (and a few nightmarish rain and tent experiences!) planted the seeds for Vaughan's future ventures in the camping and caravanning industry and solidified his commitment to this market. Transition to Caravans: Starting with soft floor camper trailers, MDC progressed to hard floor campers, including rear fold and forward fold designs. Vaughan’s innovative approach led MDC to be the first to manufacture these products in China. The natural progression from camper trailers to small caravans allowed MDC to expand its offerings and meet the evolving demands of both on-road and off-road caravan markets. Healthy Mind and Healthy Business: An entrepreneurial journey isn’t just about business success. Vaughan also speaks candidly about being significantly overweight for a period of time when the business was growing and spurred by health issues during a trip to China, he prioritised his health. He lost a significant amount of weight, changed his lifestyle from working 16 hour days, 7 days a week, to enjoying more balanced lifestyle. Loyalty, family, and personal drive are highlighted as important values, alongside the acknowledgment that not everyone is suited to entrepreneurship due to differing motivations and work ethics. “I always say, I've been a lucky guy, I guess things fall into my lap, but you have to make your own luck. And I think it's just seeing opportunity. One of the secrets to being a good business owner is to be good to your people. Because you need to respect their time, respect their needs, and know what actually drives them. Some people are driven by money. Some people are driven by family time.    Ep 09 - How To Concept and Produce A New Range of Caravans // Forte SR On-Road Series

   Hello and welcome to OFFGRID DOWNUNDER. Today we’re chatting with James Field, General Manager of Commercial and Product at MDC Campers and Caravans, and the Owner, Vaughan Hindley. We spoke with them at length about MDC’s latest achievement - the launch of a brand-new range, the Forte SR Series On-Road Caravans. James is an expert in product development and enhancement at MDC, which is well-known for being a company that constantly releases new and improved products, and he shares his excitement and challenges of working for a company committed to innovation and quality improvement. He explains that the foundation of MDC’s success is a company culture driven by a passion for constant innovation, inspired by the forward-thinking leadership of Vaughan Hindley. Vaughan’s vision and passion for being a leader in the industry has allowed James and his team to invest substantial time and resources into developing new models like the Forte SR Series. They then collaborate with their exclusive manufacturing partner including hands-on work at the factory to ensure that the project brief is executed precisely. This thorough and detailed approach is what sets MDC apart, enabling them to create high-quality, innovative products that meet customer needs and expectations. James speaks glowingly of his team: “Launching seven models in one go as a series, is a very, very big achievement for the team. And I couldn't be prouder of the team.” We also spoke with the owner of MDC Campers and Caravans, Vaughan Hindley, about the launch of the new caravan series, and he shares his insights into what inspired him to make the massive investment into developing a whole new range outside of their off-road niche.    EP 08 - James Field – Why MDC FINALLY Made an On-Road Caravan - Launching Our Forte SR Series

James Field, MDC General Manager – Commercial & Product This week in OFFGRID DOWNUNDER is very exciting, because MDC are doing something that might come as a shock to most people already familiar with the brand… the company is launching the new Forte SR Series – a Sealed Road caravan range that sits alongside their highly popular and award winning 4WD range. We sat down and spoke with James Field, the General Manager - Commercial and Product at MDC, and he shared with us a behind the scenes preview into the launch, and we asked him all the questions you would want to know, and hopefully we’ve answered them for you in this episode! James started his career as a blue-collar 17-year-old cabinetmaker for a European motorhome company. He learned all aspects from the interior, plumbing, electrical, and chassis engineering, from the ground up. He moved on to one of Queensland's largest caravan dealerships and ran their workshop for several years – from service repair, warranty, pre-delivery, and product development model improvements. He worked for TAFE Queensland, as a training provider and developed some technical resources to help people in the trade to learn more about how to build and repair caravans. Then he worked for the Caravan Industry Association of Australia, which is the peak national body for everything caravan and camping, working in compliance including government regulatory change. One of James’ roles at MDC was to also help bring the Forte SR Series to life. And to make MDC more accessible to people who might not require all the features of a heavier, more robust 4WD caravan, but to create a range that allows customers to enter the market for a cheaper price and easier towing, but maintain the same high quality, luxury accessories, safety, reliability, energy conscious and camping lifestyle that all MDC owners are lucky to have.    EP 07 – Daniel Easton – ‘MDC Family’ and Review of his XT19HRT

   Nothing sums up the relationship that members of the ‘MDC Family’ share more than these three simple words “We can help”. Today on the OFFGRID DOWNUNDER podcast, we chat with the MDC AUSRV Owners Group ‘Head Honcho’, Daniel Easton, as he dropped into the Brisbane Warehouse on his way through to attending a recent MDC tagalong trip in Northern NSW. He thought he was coming in to get a free t-shirt and merch… but we had other ideas! We sat down with him to chat about his long-term relationship with MDC as an owner of his fourth trailer/van since 2013, as well as to get a very honest review of how much he enjoys his latest MDC caravan – which he proudly boasts is the original prototype of the luxury XT19HRT (And if you now Daniel, he only knows how to give honest feedback!) Daniel lives in Northern Queensland, and driving the 4,500km+ round trip down to the MDC organised Tag Along trip, feels like nothing to him when he knows that he is meeting up with great friends from the MDC team and other MDC Owners to share a long weekend of camping and catching up in a beautiful part of Australia. It's also not uncommon at these events to see MDC team and owners such as Daniel helping new people to the group with their vans, teaching them how to use them to their best capability, sharing towing tips, energy efficiency tips and how to live offgrid indefinitely… and always a tall yarn or two over a beer around the campfire! Daniel has been everywhere in his various MDC vans - Cape York twice, Savannah Way multiple times, the Kimberly, Birdsville to the Big Red Bash many times, and up and down the east coast multiple times to name a few. And his wealth of knowledge in both 4WDriving, camping, towing and how to get the most out of your caravan is invaluable. And more importantly, he’s happy to share this information.    EP 06 - Melissa J Scott - Tips, insights and dealing with loneliness when travelling solo

   “What is the main issue with travelling solo in a caravan? Probably loneliness, it's that whole feeling about being alone and that's a human trait. Being in a caravan, being alone out in the middle of the outback, completely alone without any kind of service range, that's alone!... I am so far from everywhere. And I've got two choices here. I could drive to the next major centre, and fly somebody in from home and then just drive home with my tail between my legs. Or  I could just get over the fear. Thankfully I chose the second option!” Melissa J Scott Solo Female Traveller Having just finished a recent lap of Queensland, some 12,000km solo travelling and towing an MDC XT10E, Melissa shares some of the many tips and insights that she learned along the way about what it’s like to travel for 2 months as a solo female. She is regularly questioned about what it was like being a solo female traveling, including security and safety, how she coped with the being on her own and in particular what it was like to be alone in the outback, what inspired her to do the trip in the first place, and would she do it again… are just some of the things she covers! So how does a petite 50+ year old, solo, widowed professional mother of adult sons, small business owner, and self-confessed city girl who couldn’t reverse a caravan let alone change a spare tyre, find herself at the Big Red Bash and then headed up to Gulf of Carpentaria, across the Savannah Way and up to Cape York?! Well, you just have to tune into the episode and learn about it for yourself! And if you even have an inkling that you might like to do a solo trip yourself but think that it’s just too hard… then definitely tune in and be inspired to getting out of your comfort zone and giving a trip like this a go yourself! “I've really come to learn that the only person that's been holding me back my whole life is me. I've always wanted my partner to propel me along and do things with my partner but after I was widowed, I had to try and fluke getting a partner who loves to do exactly what I do.    EP 5 - Meet Wayne Chevis, MDC Newcastle Branch Mgr and Assist National Sales Mgr

We are really excited to be chatting with Wayne Chevis. And I know you’re not supposed to have favourites… but Wayne is definitely a very popular and well-loved character at MDC! Wayne didn’t have your typical Aussie upbringing, he grew up in Kakadu National Park, and shares how his childhood experiences shaped his adventurous spirit and career path into the camping industry. He ‘ran away’ at 18 and worked as a chef in the Navy, and unfolds how he eventually found himself at MDC, where he has risen to a significant role in the company over the past four years. The conversation highlights Wayne's passion for the caravan industry and the importance of the customer experience at MDC. He emphasises the strong sense of family within the company and the commitment to quality and customer satisfaction – and the strong character traits that he learned in the military, which he has carried with him in his adult life.    EP 04 Greg Donovan, Founder of the Big Red Bash, Birdsville & Mundi Mundi - OFFGRID DOWNUNDER

   From a corporate career in insurance, to a real life struggle with mental health and his teen age son’s life-threatening medical diagnosis, to ultra-marathon running, raising over $1M for Type 1 Diabetes, and then becoming one of Australia’s biggest and most successful music promoters with the world-famous Birdsville Big Red Bash… Greg Donovan would have to be one of the most interesting and yet humble people I’ve ever met! Greg is the founder, creator and ‘Head Honcho’ of The Big Red Bash, originating in 2013 with John Williamson singing and playing on top of the Big Red sand dune, as a side gig to their ultra-marathon fund raising event, the Big Red Run. It’s such an honour to have Greg as our guest this week on the OFFGRID DOWNUNDER show, where he shares a lot of the little known behind-the-scenes stories, and gives some insight into what drove him to create the music festival. Famously known as the world’s remotest music festival on the planet, the Big Red Bash at Birdsville, and it’s counterpart, Mundi Mundi Bash held out of Broken Hill, sees thousands of people from around Australia, and the world, head into the desert every year for these iconic events. What you might not know is that the Big Red Bash is entirely funded by Greg and his wife Raylene, and it ran at a significant loss in its first year. Greg never intended to be a music promoter. He was an ultra-marathon runner and more interested in his Big Red Run Simpson Desert 250km event, but when he saw that people were showing more interest in the music event that went alongside it, he and Raylene personally backed the concert in 2014, that attracted 1,000 peopleand ran at a significant loss. (They budgeted for 1,500 attendees to break even.) To make matters even worse, Greg returned to his day job in Sydney (which he’d held for 20 years in insurance) and was made redundant! Fortunately he was given a golden hand shake $300K redundancy pay, but instead of paying himself back for the loss they’d incurred, he invested it all into getting Jimmy Barnes and other major music acts to attend the 2015 Bash, to attract a bigger audience, and the 2015 Big Red Bash operated with a modest profit that saw 3,000 people heading out to the Simpson Desert! (Which I’m proud to say I was one of them!) Fast forward to today, some ten years later, and the Big Red Bash has evolved into the world's most remote music festival, drawing over 11,000 visitors to the red centre in 2023. It's a celebration of Australian music, culture, and the great outdoors, where campers from all walks of life come together for an unforgettable experience under the desert stars. So, whether you're rolling up in your MDC camper or caravan or pitching a tent under the desert sky, the Big Red Bash promises an adventure like no other. I’m really excited about this interview with Greg Donovan, he is such a visionary and inspiration to all who hear his story.    OFFGRID DOWNUNDER – Vaughan Hindley, Owner and Found of MDC Caravans and Camper Trailers “How it All Began” We are so excited for this next guest on the OFFGRID DOWNUNDER podcast.  We are uncovering a small part of the Vaughan Hindley story - the mastermind, owner and founder behind MDC Caravans and Camper Trailers. Vaughan isn't one to seek the spotlight; he's all about the business and making things happen. But let me assure you, his journey from humble beginnings to becoming a key player in the caravan industry is quite an interesting tale and all that you think you might know about him… might be turned on its head once you watch this! Originally from Brisbane, Vaughan didn't have a privileged start to life. He and his wife Melinda were working hard as croupiers at the Brisbane casino, while running a sideline online business that soon took over their life. He explains “we started with $5,000 in 2005. And in 2023 we turned over north of 100 million a year, but we don't take money out of the business. Everything that we earn goes back in so we can grow it.” What started as selling camping kettles and solar lights via eBay to remote areas, grew into ATV’s, go-karts, and minibikes, and grew into camper trailers and now one of the highest performing offroad caravan and camper trailer manufacturing companies in Australia. It has never just been about selling trailers and caravans; it is about catering to the adventure seekers and everyday family people and providing them with quality products that allow them to confidently travel and make lasting memories. And Vaughan, an avid camper and fisherman himself, is the driving force behind it all. In this podcast episode, Vaughan shares the ups and downs of his journey. He's refreshingly honest about the challenges faced along the way, demonstrating true resilience and determination. What sets Vaughan apart is his recognition of the team effort behind MDC's success.     Ep 2 - MDC Team - Steve Zammit, MDC Customer Advocate & 'Mayor of MDC Paddock'

    In the second episode of OFFGRID DOWNUNDER, we chat with Steve Zammit, the Customer Advocate at MDC Caravans and Camper Trailers. Steve brings all his camping industry wisdom and know-how to MDC, as he explains his role and how it benefits customers and users of MDC caravans. Essentially, Steve is the ‘voice’ of our customers, ensuring that every MDC adventurer gets the royal treatment, safeguarding their rights and ease throughout their journey. In this episode, Steve also shares his passion for protecting consumer rights, making sure that everyone who hops on board an MDC caravan enjoys a smooth ride from the initial buying process to the handover process and well into the future. He emphasizes the importance of fairness in sales, warranties, and aftercare, highlighting MDC's commitment to upholding Australian consumer laws and keeping customers smiling through the tight practice of meeting all industry regulations, in particular ISO 9001 and industry-lead RVMAPS. On a lighter note, Steve also moonlights as the official "Mayor of the MDC Paddock," as the friendly face and champion for MDC & AUSRV Owners at events like the Big Red Bash in Birdsville, which he frequents every year. We share some great stories of the close-knit community that has grown from these events, where friendships are forged around campfires and experiences are selflessly shared amongst all who choose to get involved. And the nice thing is, it’s such an inclusive community that everybody is included.     EP 1 - Meet MDC Owners, Mandy & Rolly Heath + Daniel Easton

    Welcome to the very first episode of the OFFGRID DOWNUNDER podcast and video series, presented by MDC Caravans and Campers, and made especially for you! If you’ve stumbled across this podcast or video, it’s because you have some kind of interest in the caravanning and camping world, and so do we! MDC is a very prominent Australian owned caravan company, and this podcast is focused on sharing behind-the-scenes stories, adventures and advice from our MDC Camping and Caravanning Community. For our first episode, we are interviewing long-term MDC Owner’s friends Mandy and Rolly Heath, from YouTube channel ‘Memories Not Money’. I had the pleasure of meeting them last year when driving in convoy to the Big Red Bash in Birdsville, with the MDC & AUSRV Owners Group and MDC team. - And then travelling into Cape York in convoy with them. Mandy and Rolly epitomise the warmth and generosity that characterises our community. As active members of the MDC & AUSRV Owners Group on Facebook, (which boasts an active membership of over 20,000 people) and is independently run by the exceptional Daniel Easton, they all embody the spirit of MDC and the camping industry. Therefore, we thought it only fitting with the first episode of the podcast that we would feature some of our fantastic members and customers - people that love, breathe, and eat the lifestyle of caravanning and camping. I also interviewed Daniel Easton, the owner of the MDC & AUSRV Owners Group, and proud owner of his third caravan. (Mandy and Rolly are also about to upgrade to their third MDC caravan.) In this podcast, you get to meet a lot of our members and hear their unique stories. Through their experiences and recommendations, they help us bring a better product to you guys, and I am so excited to introduce them to you. For authenticity's sake, this interview was recorded while sitting in a pub at Laura after having just come out of Cape York. We were feeling a little tired, but excited after our adventures, and this is a conversation all about the trip with some pretty powerful tips and insights from Mandy and Rolly about travelling safely around Australia. Daniel’s interview comes to you from a little town called Bedourie, which is a couple of hundred kilometres outside of Birdsville, when we'd wrapped up the Big Red Bash and everyone was heading either home or to different locations.
