Meet Dr. Rolundus R. Rice, Chief Operating Officer, Tuskegee University | Career Paths for PhDs

Email hello@jasmingoodman.com About Our Guest: Dr. Rolundus Rice tells the story of how he dropped out of high school in Atlanta and his then-girlfriend found out and promptly dropped him. The motivation to get her back changed the trajectory of his life. He subsequently earned a GED before earning a Ph.D. from Auburn University in the discipline of History. It is believed that he was the first GED recipient to earn the terminal degree from Auburn since the school was founded in 1856. Dr. Rice, who former students referred to as “The Dapper Dean,” returned to Tuskegee last year as Chief Operating Officer. He taught world history here while completing his doctoral studies at Auburn University. With more than 20 years of experience in higher education, he joined TU after having served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Prior to the vice presidency, Rice has served as history professor, dean of an undergraduate division and a graduate school. Dr. Rice is an expert on 20th century history, specifically, the Modern Civil Rights Movement. His latest book, Hosea Williams: A Lifetime of Defiance and Protest, was recently published by the University of South Carolina Press. Dr. Rice is married to the former Dana Lee. They have four children who aspire to be future Golden Tigers: Madison, Marley, Rolundus III, and Remington.

As a research enthusiast and former educator, I have led education and public health research and monitoring and evaluation projects (M&E) in over 7 countries in Latin America and Africa. I am passionate about improving access to education for all students, especially for adolescents, girls, and vulnerable communities globally. I am the Senior Advisor for Education and International Grantmaking at Rotary International, partnering with Rotary members from around the world to design and implement high quality basic education and literacy projects. I have a PhD in Comparative International Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My work draws on anthropology of education, African feminism, and African Studies. While writing my dissertation, I realize I did not want to pursue a career in the academy. I knew there were many non-academic career opportunities for social science PhDs but was not interested in working in tech or UX research. I’ve learned so much navigating my transition from the academia to the social impact world, and here I share my tips & tricks on how Social Science PhDs can successfully transition from the academia into non-academic careers with non-profits and foundations. Goodwin is from Western New York by way of Lackawanna, NY. She received her Bachelors in Public Communications and Masters in Creative Education from SUNY Buffalo State College. She earned her doctorate from the University of the Virgin Islands in Creative Leadership for Innovation and Change in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. Her research includes innovation, creative problem-solving, teamwork, and diversity equity and inclusion within organizations. She is a highly collaborative, engaging, and dedicated organizational change leader with 11 years of progressive experience in executive-level leadership in organizational change management and professional development within public, private, non for profit, government, and in higher education institutions. He attended North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University as an undergraduate, earning a B.S. in Biological Engineering. He then matriculated to Pennsylvania State University, earning a M.S. in Agricultural & Biological Engineering. Following his time at Penn State, Dr. Washington obtained his Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering doctorate from Iowa State University in August 2017. His doctoral research focused on the fate and transport of pesticides and antibiotics in agricultural watersheds. After completing graduate school, he worked for California Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with the North Coast Water Quality Control Board as a Water Resource Control Engineer (WRCE), gaining experience in the Cannabis Regulatory Unit and implementing statewide cannabis policy to protect water quality. At his next stop, he worked for Leyton USA as their Agricultural Technical Consultant, serving as a technical expert for all agricultural-related projects and supporting clients with their R&D Tax credits. Dr. Washington works for Trinchero Family Estates (TFE) as their Agricultural Water Resource Engineer. UBUNTU Research and Evaluation was founded by dr. monique liston as a space to hold her dissertation research findings while protecting Black women’s intellectual thought, leadership and vision. UBUNTU is a Bantu term that loosely translates into English, “I am because we are.” UBUNTU was chosen because it is a word that represents the core principle of UBUNTU as an organization while connecting us as members of the globally displaced African diaspora. Protecting the dignity of all Black people with Black women and femmes at the lead is UBUNTU’s priority. UBUNTU was founded on January 1, 2017, Dr. John Henrik Clarke’s 102nd birthday, intentionally chosen to memorialize our intellectual genealogy within pan-African consciousness. Sadeh is a former Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame and current Presidential Management Fellow for the Class of 2022, via the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. During his time at Notre Dame, his main field of study was in American Politics, with an emphasis in Latino Politics, Immigration/Migration, and Race and Ethnicity Politics. His additional research interests included State Politics, Civil Rights/Liberties, Constitutional Law, and Islamic Law. Before joining CTP, he worked as a chemist at FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) for over a decade. About Our Guest: Jessica Broome is a seasoned and dynamic researcher with diverse experience in both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. She focuses on rigorous questionnaire design to collect high-quality data, as well as using data to tell a story that leads clients to action. Jessica began her career in the non-profit sector, interviewing incarcerated people in state prisons and city jails across New York. She then worked for several years in the research and insights departments of major public relations agencies, including Ogilvy and Edelman, where she managed the much-publicized Edelman Trust Barometer. She founded Southpaw Insights in 2008 to conduct meaningful research that helps organizations understand what people think, feel, and do. Jessica and her team at Southpaw conduct results-oriented research for both agencies and end clients across a broad swath of sectors, including pharmaceutical, food, technology, financial services, consumer packaged goods, education, and non-profits. Jessica holds a PhD in Survey Methodology from the University of Michigan and an M.S. degree in Applied Social Research from Hunter College. She graduated from Connecticut College, where she earned a B.A. degree in Sociology and minored in German and Hispanic Studies.

Email hello@jasmingoodman.com About Our Guest: Dr. Brandale Mills Cox is a professor, researcher, communications professional and training facilitator. She is currently a tenure track professor at Howard University (Washington, DC) in the Strategic, Legal and Management Communication Department where she teaches Advanced Public Relations writing and Public Affairs & Management. She was formerly a communications faculty member at Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Assistant Professor and Graduate Program Coordinator at Norfolk State University (Norfolk, VA) in the Mass Communications and Journalism department. In this role, she taught communications courses, supervised the graduate program and its students, in addition to coordinating the program’s logistics. Her passion for diverse representation is seen in her book, “Black Women Filmmakers and Black Love on Screen” which offers a thorough examination of depictions of Black Love in films directed by Black women and the importance of diversity in Hollywood to create a more comprehensive representation of communities of color. As a public relations practitioner, she has worked as the Director of Communications at the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office where she handled media outreach and planning on behalf of the office’s initiatives. She also worked as a Media Specialist for the United States Census Bureau, publicizing 2020 Census efforts throughout the state of New Mexico. Dr. Mills Cox earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Print Journalism from the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque, New Mexico), her Master of Arts and Doctorate degree from Howard University (Washington, DC) in Mass Communications and Media Studies and Communication, Culture and Media Studies.
