Private Copying Royalties in Canada

This week, we're looking at an important topic in the world of royalties: private copying. This topic is very important for music creators to be aware of, as Canada only has private copying levies on outdated technology and has not kept up with new developments in technology. Lisa Freeman from the Canadian Private Copying Collective (CPCC) offered her insights and explained what private copying is, what the CPCC does, and why Canada's Copyright Act needs to be updated to keep up with technological innovation. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did!

Follow CPCC and subscribe to their mailing list to stay informed and #StandOnGuardForMusic:

https://mailchi.mp/8a45c01f8a06/cpccmailinglist

https://www.facebook.com/cpcc.scpcp/

https://www.instagram.com/cpcc.scpcp/

If you have any questions for Lisa from CPCC, feel free to email her directly: lfreeman@cpcc.ca

Cover art by CPCC

If you enjoyed the episode, please subscribe to OffKey and leave us a rating and review on iTunes! https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/offkey/id1450403128?mt=2

Get in touch, we'd love to hear from you! How Artists Are Adapting During COVID-19

This week, we’re tackling a pressing topic at a time like this: how artists are adjusting in the context of COVID-19. For musicians, artists, tour teams, and other team members, the economic disruption caused by COVID-19 has led to cancellations and postponements of virtually all gigs, tours, and festivals for at least the next couple months. This has resulted in a major upheaval in both music creators’ ability to earn a living and the music industry at large. Without in-person live shows, artists are now facing a new trajectory for how to engage with their audiences, and many are turning to one particular online tool: livestreaming. I had the pleasure of speaking with Juno-award winning artist Dan Mangan and emerging artist Kubla about how their adapting and utilizing livestreaming as artists. I hope you enjoy our conversations as much as I did! Wishing everyone health and safety at this difficult time.

@danmanganmusic
@kubla

Financial assistance programs in Canada:

https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/corporate/notices/coronavirus.html

https://www.ontario.ca/page/ministry-children-community-and-social-services

https://nac-cna.ca/en/canadaperforms/apply

https://torontoartscouncil.org/grant-programs/toartist-covid-response-fund

Photo by Elana Jacobs

If you enjoyed the episode, please subscribe to OffKey and leave us a rating and review on iTunes! https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/offkey/id1450403128?mt=2

Get in touch, we'd love to hear from you! The Recording Artist's Royalty Collections

This week, we're continuing down the path of royalty collections, looking at how the recording artist gets paid when their songs are played. I had the pleasure of speaking with Martin Gangnier from Re:Sound, Matt Craig from MROC, and Andrew Karis from ACTRA-RACS to learn about royalty collections on the master side. We discussed Canada's royalty collections system, how usage data is collected, and how tariff rates are determined. I hope you enjoy our conversations and that this episode is helpful to any music creators out there looking to make money from their music!

Photo by Denisse Leon on Unsplash

Show notes for this episode: https://medium.com/@taliya/offkey-season-3-episode-11-the-recording-artists-royalty-collections-a784e6bb4aa0

If you enjoyed the episode, please subscribe to OffKey and leave us a rating and review on iTunes! https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/offkey/id1450403128?mt=2

Get in touch, we'd love to hear from you!
