Oh, Reel Original!, hosted by lifelong friends Corey Dempsey and Andrew Beam, explores the phenomenon of twin films: two movies with the exact same premise that are released within the same 12-month period.
In each episode, the pair of movies are pitted against one another in an MMA style bout (that’s why Beam sounds like Bruce Buffer… you get it!). The hosts are joined by an artist from the Capital Region to debate the two films and decide which film was ultimately superior.
Oh, Reel Original - S1E5 - Kids Join A Major League Franchise with Nathaniel Como
Title: Kids Join A Major League Franchise with Nathaniel Como
This week, the boys are going back to the 90s to explore a pair of films where middle school children get involved with a Major League Baseball franchise. These two movies, along with The Sandlot and Angels in the Outfield were formative movies for children of the 90s. The boys invited their good friend Nathaniel Como, the lead singer of Not Chinese Takeout, to help them decide which film did it better.
This week’s pair of movies are 1993’s Rookie of the Year where Henry Rowengartner helps the Chicago Cubs break the Curse of the Billy Goat and 1994’s Little Big League where Billy Haywood inherits the Minnesota Twins from his grandfather and inserts himself as manager.

Both coming out in 1997, Dante’s Peak starring Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton and Volcano starring Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche detail the human response to the sudden nature of an eruption. The two movies take vastly different approaches with one playing out like a procedural detective story while the other treats the volcano like a horror movie villain.

Oh, Reel Original! - S1E1 - Hooking Up Without Catching Feelings with Bri Morrison
The boys are joined by Albany based comedian Bri Morrison to analyze a pair of rom-coms that are all about the quest to hook up without catching feelings. Of course, because this is a rom-com, that quest is ultimately a failure, but will our movie couples learn some things about themselves in the process and potentially find everlasting happiness, whatever the hell that means.
This week’s pair of Twin Films are the 2011 romantic comedies, Friends With Benefits starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis and No Strings Attached starring Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman.
After a spirited discussion about the couples’ romantic chemistry (or lack thereof) [9:58], the boys and Bri discuss all the standard tropes that we all know and love from romantic comedies: there’s the meet-cutes [32:24], the sex montage [46:39], the break-up [53:20], and finally the reconciliation and the all-important rom-com speech [1:01:44].
