Podcast Overview

The Good of Small Things with Jessie Brinton is a new podcast from Mothership that's all about what it means to be alive and caring about kids at this particularly crazy moment in history. If you sometimes feel overwhelmed by the world and ask yourself “what can I do?” (in between loading another wash and sorting out supper, because how is it 6 already?!) then this podcast is for you. Every week, Jessie's guests confess to one small super skill they use to do their thing, explain how they deploy that skill and share what they’ve learned along the way. We think that admitting to something you’re good at is an act of bravery in a world that doesn’t exactly encourage that sort of thing. But that’s just the beginning of the conversation. If Mothership is an unofficial government of mums, then this podcast is its broadcast channel. Tune in and subscribe to hear the stories, get the knowledge and be part of a moment when the mums, aunties, grandmas, sisters, carers, plant mums and dog mums are taking charge, as it happens.

The Good of Small Things is co-produced with Mary Chan and Sophie King, from a concept by Orsola de Castro

Contact the Mothership team at hello@heymothership.com with your questions, ideas and advertising enquiries.

Follow us on Instagram (tag #thegoodofsmallthings).

Hosted on Acast. Paula James Martinez on life after a wildfire

How would you manage if you

were evacuated from your home because of a wildfire and your community burned to the ground?

It’s almost un-imaginable to those of us in the UK but for Paula James Martinez, her husband and 7 year old daughter, it happened in early January when the Eaton fire ripped through her local town of Altadena, destroying homes and businesses and leaving many of her friends homeless.

A British-born writer and filmmaker who also runs Mother Lovers, a non-profit raising awareness about maternal health, she’s spent the time since helping her community work out what to do next.

The US news cycle has been moving so fast and so loud since the fires that it’s almost as if they didn’t happen. But they did. This conversation with Paula took place at the end of January and we were tempted to ask her if we could re-record it. But then we listened to it again and there’s so much in it that\s inspiring for us all to hear. Powerful, crazy white men might be driving the news narrative.

But the stories we most need to hear are the ones on the ground, in places where real people live real lives where every small thing you do matters.

So whenever you’re listening to this, in early 2025 or a year’s time, here it is, in its original form, an emotional and very worthwhile conversation with Paula about what people do when the unimaginable happens.

Hosted on Acast. Amy Zing makes spaces where everybody belongs

Amy Zing is the co-founder of the legendary east London queer club night, Sink the Pink. Before she was the mum of her son, she was a mum to the whole Sink the Pink community. With her best friend Glyn, she created spaces where everybody got to feel cool and fun and like they belonged, whoever they were and however they felt outside. Sink the Pink had its final event in 2022, but its memory is engraved on the hearts of every person who spent a night there. Today she lives in Margate with her partner and son, still being a mum to LGBTQI communities there too as co-founder of Margate Pride and the proprietor of Margate Arts Club. In this special chat, we talk about everything important, including the transferrable skills you need for mothering hundreds of drag queens and a 6 year old, the importance of batch cooking in avoiding burnout, and creating the communities full of love that so many of us long for.

Hosted on Acast.
