A handful of them stirred cookpots over the fire, and she smiled at them shyly. None returned the gesture, though she could feel their eyes on her back as she passed. Theirs and those of others she couldn't see, perhaps peering from the folds of their tents. Lavinia felt a chill as her steps carried her beyond the hush of the camp into the deeper waters.
