maintaining biblical friendship | On Water Podcast Ep. 49

On this episode of the On Water Podcast, Jin Choi sits down with four-time guest Ruth Altaye to talk about how their friendship formed and deepened over three years through shared church community, worship, and one pivotal seven-hour conversation marked by vulnerability. They reflect on the difference between “intentional/ministry” conversations and truly knowing someone, and how communication, clarification, and noticing each other’s needs helped them navigate anxious/avoidant tendencies, misunderstandings, and a few disagreements. They discuss friendship “seasons,” learning not to measure closeness by feelings or time alone, and choosing trust based on history and character. They also explore sacrifice in friendship as joyful giving of time, effort, and comfort, and end by encouraging listeners to do the work with God, pursue community, invite others, and not view themselves as defective in relationships.

Intergenerational Communication in Christian Media w/ Chris Vascher and Kayla Smith | On Water Podcast Ep. 48

Intergenerational Communication in Church Media: Trust, Authenticity, and Reaching Gen ZOn the On Water Podcast, host Jin Choi introduces a workshop from the ACP/CCCA conference “Reaching Across Divides” on intergenerational communication, featuring Jin (Millennial), Kayla (Gen Z, national director of How to Life), and Chris Vascher (Gen X, founder of ClearWay Church Solutions). They discuss how churches and Christian media can communicate across generations amid shifting mediums from print to digital, widespread institutional mistrust, and Gen Z’s search for stability, authenticity, justice, and relational trust. Chris contrasts 20th-century leadership (visionary, directive, results-driven) with 21st-century leadership (coaching, relationship, outcomes), while Kayla highlights collaborative structures, accountability, and rest rhythms. The group explores storytelling and behind-the-scenes transparency to build trust, and addresses the need for confession, repentance, and reconciliation to avoid losing younger generations.

tips from a therapist (who loves Jesus) | On Water Podcast Ep. 47

In this episode of the On Water Podcast, I share three mental health tips as a psychotherapist who loves Jesus and wants faith and psychology to integrate well. First, in conflict, I practice clarifying intent while also correcting behavior, so I can extend grace and still set boundaries. Second, when I struggle with identity or low self-esteem, I ask where the belief started—often in childhood—and do the deeper work of uprooting lies, forgiving, and grounding my identity in Christ. Third, for anxiety and “what if” thoughts, I follow the thought to the end to find safety, and I calm my body through silence, solitude, prayer, and rest.
