   Ian Trebinski, COO, V.Ships

On this episode of One Step Beyond, we are joined by Ian Trebinski, COO, V.Ships. In this episode, Ian Trebinski, COO of V-Ships, offers a compelling look at leadership through the lens of one of the world’s most complex and overlooked industries. He reflects on the early moments that shaped his leadership philosophy, from being a 19-year-old officer cadet learning humility at sea to navigating the transition from operational roles to high-stakes strategic leadership. Ian reminds us that growth begins with acknowledging what we don’t know and being willing to learn through discomfort. Throughout the conversation, Ian highlights the human side of global shipping, emphasizing the incredible responsibility leaders carry when their decisions impact people working in difficult, high-risk environments. He shares lessons on managing culturally diverse teams, making ethical choices under pressure, and staying grounded while overseeing operations that move 90% of the world’s trade. His examples illustrate that leadership is not just about expertise, it’s about compassion, clarity, and the courage to do what’s right when it matters most. Looking to the future, Ian explores how automation, sustainability, and new technologies will reshape expectations in the maritime sector and beyond. He stresses that human judgment, ethical leadership, and personal resilience remain irreplaceable. The episode closes with personal insights, from reconnecting with nature to embracing curiosity, underscoring that leaders who cultivate balance, perspective, and continuous self-reflection are best equipped to guide their teams through uncertainty and change. ON THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT Humility accelerates leadership growth. The willingness to admit gaps and learn quickly is often what separates effective leaders from experienced managers. Ethical leadership is non-negotiable, especially when decisions impact people’s safety, well-being, or long-term career trajectory. Technology and automation will transform industries, but human judgment, emotional intelligence, and ethical decision-making will remain essential. About Ian Trebinski:Ian brings over 25 years of global maritime industry experience from across multiple sectors. He has worked at sea, as a navigating officer, and since coming ashore has held senior HSSEQ roles within Oil & Gas, Ports, and Subsea, and has held senior consultant roles in organisations that shape both national and international maritime legislation and policy. Ian holds an MSc in Safety and Risk Management from Heriot-Watt University, and he currently represents V.Group on several industry bodies that are actively working for the continual improvement of safety culture, and safe working practices, to the benefit of the international maritime community. […] So absolutely, there is an opportunity here and there will be for many, many, many years to come. And I think the most interesting element of it is maybe the roles on board of vessels won't change so much. It's the opportunities when you make that transition from the vessel to the shore. If you want to do that, of course, there will always be people who want to be a captain and they will spend all of their career at sea being a captain. Super fine. But there are now opportunities on shore that didn't exist five years ago. With the inventor, as we go as we come more digital, as we bring new energy and new propulsion technologies online, we've got to write the legislation around that. […]
