The characters in La Boheme and in these stories are based on people he himself knew, and the poverty in it and the deaths of these characters are based on real deaths of his friends. So there's a bit of a tension here where these stories both romanticize this ideal of living outside of society in a way, but also show the real cost of that, especially when it comes to the women who are involved.
