This is a podcast about disorder: about protest, riot and revolt; about law, the state and the international realm, It is about the people who revolt and disobey, about the ideas that bring people to the streets or explain why they are there, and about the way that the state responds to them.
#52: Criminalising the Catcall in Abolitionist Times
Catcalling is a form of gender-based social control that results in many people, especially women, feeling unsafe in their environment. Despite affecting many across the entire world with sometimes lifelong consequences, most countries do not have laws against certain forms of street harassment. Global movements are increasingly advocating for the criminalisation of catcalling as a solution for this form of violence. This episode of “Orders in Decay” dives into the polarising debate between carceral feminists, which advocate for the criminalisation of catcalling, and anti-carceral feminists, that seek to create justice through alternative means. Joined by abolitionist scholar Prof. Dr Anna Terwiel, this episode asks: Must we rely on the criminalisation of catcalling for protection or are there other ways to make our streets safe?
