The 3PM Crash: What Decision Fatigue Actually Does to a High-Achieving Brain

You wake up sharp and crash by 3 pm. Cheryl Palmer, RN and founder of Cheryl On Lux, breaks down decision fatigue: why it hits high achievers the hardest and the 3-part fix that protects your energy starting today.

Show Notes

You are not lazy in the afternoon. You are depleted.

Every choice you make pulls from the same mental energy account, whether it is picking a font or deciding whether to leave a job. Your brain does not rank decisions by importance. It just counts them. By mid-afternoon, that account runs low, and your judgment runs low right along with it. This is decision fatigue, and researchers have documented it in judges, surgeons, and shoppers.

High achievers feel it hardest. Leaders, nurses, caregivers, and business owners make more decisions, and higher-stakes ones, before lunch than most people make all day. If you end most days foggy, irritable, or unable to pick a restaurant, that is not failure. That is an empty account.

Key takeaways:

Decision fatigue is measurable and well documented. It is not a character flaw.

The heavier your responsibility load, the harder you feel it.

The 3-part fix: automate the small stuff, make your hardest choices early, and build in a real stopping point.

This week's action: tonight, remove one decision from tomorrow's calendar. Do not delay it. Remove it.

Resources mentioned:

Free 7 Pillars of Peace Checklist

Companion blog article: "Decision Fatigue Is Real" at CherylOnLux.com

About the host:

Cheryl Palmer is a dual board-certified RN, healthcare leader, and founder of Cheryl On Lux, "The Nurse Who Prescribes Luxury." Organized Opulence is her weekly take on protecting your energy, your peace, and your life, without giving up your ambition.

New Episode Every Second and Fourth Wednesday

Sleep Like you are at a 5-Star Hotel Every Night

If you are a high-achieving woman who falls into bed exhausted and still cannot sleep, this episode is your prescription.

This week on Organized Opulence, Cheryl Palmer, a registered nurse with 30+ years of experience, breaks down exactly why sleep is not something you earn after a productive day. It is the foundation that makes productivity possible in the first place.

Using current peer-reviewed research, Cheryl walks you through the five evidence-based elements of a luxury sleep environment, the science of melatonin and cortisol, and a five-step wind-down ritual designed specifically for women whose minds do not automatically shut off at bedtime.

This is not wellness fluff. This is physiology made accessible, actionable, and luxurious.

In This Episode:

Why 49% of women get less than 7 hours per night — and why that number is a health crisis, not a personality trait

The temperature range (65–68 degrees Fahrenheit) backed by 134 peer-reviewed studies for optimal sleep continuity

How blue light from your phone suppresses melatonin and disrupts deep sleep — even when you feel exhausted

The lavender aromatherapy research: reduced cortisol, increased deep-sleep brain waves, and improved sleep quality in midlife women with insomnia

The Journal of Experimental Psychology finding that a 5-minute to-do list before bed helps you fall asleep faster

The five-step wind-down ritual to transition your nervous system from high-performance mode to deep rest

A 10-minute bedroom audit you can do tonight, no spending required

Resources + Links:

Blog Post: Sleep Like You Are at a 5-Star Hotel Every Night: https://www.cherylonlux.com/blog/sleep-like-youre-at-a-5-star-hotel-every-night

Connect With Cheryl:

Website: CherylOnLux.com | TikTok: @CherylOnLux | Instagram: @CherylOnLux | Stan Store: https://stan.store/cherylonlux

If this episode helped you, share it with a high-achieving woman in your life who told you last week she is exhausted. Burned Out forYears!

I Was Burned Out for Years, And It Looked Like Competence

I didn't burn out dramatically. There was no breakdown in the supply closet. There was no single moment that broke me. It was quiet. Slow. And for a long time, it was invisible , even to me.

I started nursing at 17 as an LPN. I was a single parent at 19. I worked two jobs, cardiac ICU on weekends and long-term care five days a week, for over 20 years. I raised my kids. I earned my certifications. I became a Director of Nursing. I was the person others called when things fell apart.

And somewhere in the middle of all that giving, I lost track of myself.

That is burnout. Not a breakdown. It is a slow, quiet depletion that looks like competence from the outside and feels like nothing from the inside.

In this episode, I will share the true version. Because the women who need this conversation deserve honesty more than they need a highlight reel.

What we cover in this episode:

My actual story from LPN at 17 to Director of Nursing, and what it cost me

The three-part clinical definition of burnout and what the textbooks leave out

Four honest self-check questions (answer them right now, not later)

Why high-achieving women in healthcare are the least likely to name it

What real recovery requires: a decision, a structure, and support, and why they're not sequential

If you recognized yourself in any of those four questions, that was not a coincidence.

Subscribe to the Lux Reset Newsletter

Read the companion article: Burnout Is Not a Badge of Honor

Follow @cherylonlux on Instagram and TikTok

Join the community: Facebook

Visit the Blog: cherylonlux.com

Visit the Store for more resources

Organized Opulence · Week 2 · Pillar: Mind Next episode: Your bedroom should be your best hotel.

New Episode Every Second and Fourth Wednesday
