There Was an Elevator the Whole Time

In Week 3 of IRRESISTIBLE, "Unburdened," our speaker starts with a question: what is irresistible? From hot cinnamon donuts (even with a numb face after a root canal) to a tradesman everyone seemed drawn to, he sets up the real question for the series: what makes a church irresistible? It isn't good music, a great building, friendly people, programs or even the cafe. Those create a welcoming environment, but an irresistible church is one where people encounter the reality of Jesus Christ, where grace is experienced, truth is proclaimed, love is demonstrated and burdens are lifted. He walks through Acts 15:1, where some men told the new believers that unless they were circumcised, they could not be saved. Paul and Barnabas pushed back, because adding a requirement to Jesus would turn the good news into a burden. The old covenant wasn't a bad agreement, but it was never God's ultimate plan: Jesus came as the final sacrifice, and salvation is by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9, John 3:16). Just believe. It sounds too easy, but it's the foundation. He then shares his own story: a youth rally at age 12 in 1984, running to the front, and an older mentor who told him, "It's not about rules, it's about relationship." Having grown up as an altar boy, with a view of forgiveness shaped by that tradition, he describes the weight lifting immediately. He was unburdened, and it was irresistible. An irresistible church never loses sight of the cross, and after 42 years in this church he is encouraged that it keeps pointing people to Jesus. Grace welcomes people as they are, but it also transforms them. It's not a license to live however we like (Titus 2:11), and in Christ we are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). He illustrates unnecessary burdens with a honeymoon story: carrying two heavy suitcases up six floors to prove himself, only to find an elevator around the corner. He closes with a challenge: think of one person carrying a burden they don't need to carry, such as rejection, guilt, shame or a sense of being unforgiven, and point them to Jesus through a simple conversation. And remember the moment you first said yes.

Why Rules Never Change People (And What Actually Does)

In Week 2 of IRRESISTIBLE, "Rewired," Megan opens with her own story: a pastor's kid with a curious streak and a love of learning, and now a school teacher. She tells of her very first class, where a student showed her that a list of dos and don'ts couldn't produce the change he needed. Real change had to start on the inside, and she realised she needed to move from rules to relationship. From there she asks the question at the heart of the message: what is meant to power my life? Is it my effort, or is it His Spirit? She takes us through a quick history lesson, from Moses and the first Ten Commandments to the 613 laws and the extra rules that kept being added because people weren't changing. The law was always a temporary solution, and God said so himself in Jeremiah 31:33-34, promising to write His instructions on our hearts. Megan shows how Jesus fulfilled the law (Matthew 5:17) and summed it up in two commands, love God and love your neighbour (Matthew 22). She explains that this isn't a lowering of standards but a raising of them, because the question is no longer "is it on the list?" but "is it loving God, and is it loving others?" She walks through Paul's frustration with those adding things back in, and reads from 2 Corinthians 3 about a covenant not of written laws but of the Spirit, who gives life. The new covenant is not a rule book 2.0, she says. It's a heart transplant. She shares OurChurch's mission, to partner with the Holy Spirit, teach people to love God and others, and make disciples who make disciples, and the four things the church does (SOAP devotions in community, missional villages, family gatherings and living mission) to help people become Spirit-led. She offers a simple self-check on what powers your life (how you start your day, how you respond to things, how you see others, and the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5), and returns to her first-year story with a surprising ending involving prayer and a pencil case. The challenge for the week: each morning, ask the Holy Spirit what He wants to do through you today, and act on it. She closes with an invitation to stay alert, open yourself to the Spirit and become the irresistible way back to God for a watching world.

God Moved Out of the Temple Why Are We Still Packing for It?

In Week 1 of IRRESISTIBLE, "Unhitched," Kev opens the series the way a lot of us feel about our own cupboards: we're bad at letting go. Through a hot pink suit that will never fit again, a pair of uncomfortable new shoes, a spare room full of "retired" furniture, and a dad who kept every nail and screw in a bottle, he shows how memory and attachment make us hold on to things we no longer need. He invites listeners to be curious rather than reactive as the series unfolds. He then applies the picture to faith. God once lived in a big house, the temple, filled with good things: the Ten Commandments, 613 laws, sacrifices, feasts and priests. Over time those gifts were weaponised to control people. Jesus announced a new way and said His Father was done living in buildings. Now God lives in smaller ones: every person who follows Jesus is His new address. That raises the downsizing question of what you bring in and what you leave behind. The answer is a live-in Customs Officer, the Holy Spirit. Each belief or habit gets stacked up against the teachings of Jesus as worked out by the apostles, and receives either a passport of entry or "access denied." Kev walks through Galatians 5, where Paul warns against going back under a "yoke of slavery" and says that taking on one piece of the law obligates you to the whole thing. He gives a plain overview of the Bible as a library of 66 documents, with the first part written for ancient Israel and the second for all people. He names the "smuggled" habits that creep back into homes, businesses and churches: sacred buildings, attendance and grade scorecards, titles, and command-and-control leadership. He shares personal examples, including a formal dining room nobody used and a set of expectations he was told not to send out. In Hebrews 8, the new covenant is described as better, with God's law on our hearts and sins remembered no more. Kev explains that "obsolete" means brought to its planned end, using the picture of a connecting flight, and offers a practical tip for conversations: say who said it ("Jesus said," "Paul said") rather than "The Bible says." He closes with the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15, and an invitation to let the Holy Spirit sort what stays and what goes, so that we become irresistible to a hurting world.
