Podcast Overview

OURGENPOD "talkin' 'bout Our Generation" is a bold, intelligent, irreverent podcast about life in America -- how we got here, and how we can make things better. We're focused on the generation of people 55+ -- like us -- but all are welcome. We just don't believe in Ageism. We're confronting some big challenges as a nation and globally, and we're all in this together. We don't confront, rant and rave (too much); we're looking for solutions. We've talking about the dangerous decline in civility in America. Our content is guided by our audience: we listen to our listeners. So please join the conversation, but just try to be civil!

The Science of Friendship Dr. Rebecca Adams Part 2

Continuing our popular series on Friendship, this is Part 2 of our conversation with Dr. Rebecca Adams, Professor of Sociology and Gerontology, Health and Human Sciences, University of North Carolina Greensboro, and one of the world's foremost experts on friendship as we age. In earlier episodes in our Friendship Series, we heard from listeners about what friendship means to them, including interviews with psychologists and a unique commentary on "Friends with Fur" about how animals can be our friends, too. We heard many fascinating, thought-provoking comments on friendship from many of you. One common theme was that friendship is essential to health and happiness, and a crucial cure to loneliness. Friendship is clearly crucial to our lives, and yet many of us are losing friends and becoming more and more isolated, falling victim to an "Epidemic of Loneliness" - a threat to our happiness, health, and may even shorten our lives. Dr. Adams has some advice about how to hold onto friends, make new friends, and avoid that perilous pit of loneliness.

28. Thanksgiving 1621 2025 Version

In this special Thanksgiving Episode, originally aired in 2022, Host Julian G. Simmons lets Director Rob Wilson break his vow of silence to share a bit of family genealogy about the first Thanksgiving in 1621. Rob had eight ancestors on the Mayflower. His grandmother, Carol Green Wilson, meticulously catalogued that history, and passed it on to her 12 grandchildren. As a ten year-old boy, Rob actually helped decipher the tiny print to discover one of those connections.
