Out Here: Finding Freedom After 50

About Out Here: Finding Freedom After 50

This podcast is about work, meaning, mental health, resilience, and figuring out what makes a life truly fulfilling. This is not a self-help podcast and it’s not a business podcast. These are conversations — the kind you would have sitting by a fire at the end of the day — about real life, real struggles, and what it takes to build a life that actually feels like it’s yours. This podcast is for people who did what they were supposed to do… and are now asking, “What now?” Stories, lessons, and conversations for the Second Half of Life!

It's Time For A Change AND an Apology

A new name, a fresh format, and a return to the heart of the podcast. Thomas explains why Out Here, Finding Freedom After 50 is becoming Tom’s Life After 50 and apologizes for letting the show drift from its original purpose. In this episode, he shares his perspective on choosing a solo life, living in rural northern Ontario, and finding fulfillment outside the paths society expects. He also reflects on “mortality motivation”—the reminder that time is precious and there’s no need to wait for perfect conditions to pursue what matters. The new format will follow wherever life after 50 leads, with the possibility of guests along the way. Explore Thomas’s photography, journals, and blogs at tomsview.ca. (https://tomsview.ca)

Episode 9: Winter, Depression, Responsibility, and the Courage to Keep Going

After a long hiatus, Tom returns to the screened-in porch overlooking Lake Huron for a candid conversation about one of the most challenging winters he has faced in years. In this episode, he reflects on: • Surviving a long Northern Ontario winter • Living with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and high-functioning depression • Why some goals and projects had to be temporarily set aside • The realities of trying to build a coaching business in today's social media environment • Why he is stepping away from endless content marketing • The importance of listening to your mind and body when you're struggling • Taking 100% responsibility for your life and reclaiming your personal power • Why fulfillment after 50 isn't about perfection—it's about continuing to move forward This is a deeply personal episode about resilience, self-awareness, and refusing to give up on yourself, even when life feels heavy. If you've ever struggled with depression, burnout, lack of motivation, or simply finding your next chapter, this conversation is for you. Out Here: Finding Fulfillment After 50 Simple. Solo. Rural.

   Ep 8 | A Storm, A Trip and Losing a Legend

I came home from a road trip to a snowstorm, a blocked road, and a path I couldn’t clear to my lakeside sauna. I was tired, frustrated, and in a foul mood. The next day, shovel in hand, I dug my way back. Sitting in the sauna that afternoon, I found myself thinking about the trip, the emotional roller coaster of coming home, the passing of Chuck Norris, and the loss of my dad. At some point after 50, life stops feeling endless and starts feeling finite. And that realization doesn’t have to be depressing — it can be clarifying. It can be the moment you decide to stop holding back, stop staying quiet, and start living more honestly and more intentionally. This episode is about storms, trips, legends, mortality, and the decision to use your voice and truly live while you still have time. Pull up a chair. This is a campfire conversation.

Ep 7 - If This Is the Rest of My Life.. I'm Ok With It.

This episode was recorded from a place I didn’t expect to be. It’s a quiet conversation for men — especially those over 40 — who find themselves alone, starting over, or living a life that doesn’t match the blueprint they were handed. We explore a sentence many men are afraid to say out loud: “If this is the rest of my life… I’m okay with that.” Not as resignation. Not as giving up. But as acceptance — and why acceptance is often the starting point for real change. In this episode, we talk about: Why men struggle when life slows down The difference between acceptance and resignation What it means to make peace with where you are without giving up on what could still be ahead Why it’s okay to not be okay — but not to stay there How a quieter, more honest future can still be deeply fulfilling There’s no advice here. No quick fixes. Just space to reflect. Where in your life are you still arguing with reality instead of working with it? One sentence is enough — or none at all. Ep 6 | The High Cost of Freedom

In this deeply personal and unmistakably honest episode, Tom returns to the porch—fire crackling, waves rolling in the background—to unpack the heavy questions weighing on many of us today. From political violence and free speech to media manipulation and the rising tension in North American culture, Tom reflects on how these shifts affect our ability to live freely, especially after 50. Drawing on lessons from mentors, hard-earned life experience, and books like Man’s Search for Meaning and The Miracle Morning, Tom explores how to separate what’s truly within our control from the noise that steals our peace. He also shares stories from a soul-recharging solo camping trip along Lake Superior, reminding us why nature, solitude, and intentional living are more essential now than ever. This episode is an invitation—to unplug, to think for yourself, to focus on what really matters, and to build a meaningful life on your own terms. No preaching. No politics. Just raw truth, self-reflection, and the quiet wisdom that comes from a man living simply, solo, and rural after 50. If you're a 50-something man navigating a noisy world, this is your campfire moment. Website: https://www.tomsview.ca Instagram: https://instagram.com/tomslifeafter50
