Outbeat News In Depth is a news magazine style radio show featuring a closer look at the people, events, and issues impacting the LGBT community in the California North Bay and beyond. Each show features two to four stories including the Outbeat Youth segment. The stories come from our local community and from around the country. We take a closer look at stories featured in weekly Outbeat News segments. Our goal is to keep our listeners informed of the important people, issues, and events affecting LGBT people.
This month we talk with representatives from Mental Health America of California about how they support local organizations that provide vital mental health support for LGBTQ+ people in our state. LIVE (LGBTQ+ Inclusivity, Visibility and Empowerment) is a program of changemakers, that celebrates LGBTQ+ diversity, and creates a more inclusive world where LGBTQ+ community members can live authentically. LIVE creates positive change by uplifting and empowering individuals to bolster their voices in policy, stigma reduction and unifying community. Finn Deerhart talks with Charlie J. Stephens (they/them), a queer, non-binary author and bookshop owner in Oregon. Their debut novel, “A Wounded Deer Leaps Highest,” was published by Torrey House Press in April 2024. It was long-listed for The Center For Fiction’s 2024 First Novel Prize and was a finalist for the Oregon Book Awards/Ken Kesey Award for Fiction. It was awarded the Leslie Feinberg Award in Trans and Gender-Variant Literature and the Bronze Foreword Indies Award in LGBTQ+ fiction in 2025.

Jill has been an activist, author, and is now developing an innovative conflict mediation app. And then Finn Deerhart shares his conversation with Nick Schwanz from Solar Punk Farms in Guernville. Nick is a climate activist, consultant, and educator. Solar Punk Farms is “a space filled with tomatoes and chickens , ideas, activism, art, and joy. ”
