A federal judge has ruled against President Donald Trump’s decision to freeze $2.4 billion in National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants allocated to research on gender identity and other fields tied to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Vance Boelter, the 57-year-old anti-LGBTQ+ evangelical Christian accused of killing a pro-LGBTQ+ Minnesota state Democratic lawmaker and her husband over the weekend, has finally been arrested after an intense manhunt and will face four charges of second-degree murder. Last week, members of the Changed Movement gathered on the steps of the California State Capitol and rallied for gay people who want to find Christ and abandon the “LGBTQ lifestyle.”The organization’s name is slippery, and that may be the point. And here locally, the 55th annual San Francisco Pride celebration happens next weekend, June 28 and 29. The theme is Queer Joy is Resistance.
The festival opens at noon on Saturday in Civic Center plaza and features multiple performance stages, an 18+ zone, and a street fair with over 300 artists and exhibitors. The parade starts at 10AM on Market Street at Embarcadero Plaza. The parade typically has over 250 contingents and lasts around 4 hours. Contingents step onto Market Street and proceed toward the Pride Celebration, ending around Market and 9th. Ghanaian legislators introduced a bill again this month to increase criminal penalties for homosexuality and for supporting LGBTQ+ rights. The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, if passed, would punish same-sex acts with a term of up to three years for same-sex relations and five years for “willful promotion, sponsorship or support of LGBTQ+ activities.”
About 52% of Americans approve of President Donald Trump’s handling of transgender issues, according to a new poll by the Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
And here locally, this June will mark the 30th anniversary of the pink triangle installation on Twin Peaks. In June 1996 under the cover of darkness, Patrick Carney and some friends staged a guerrilla art installation atop Twin Peaks. There, pink tarps were laid out in a triangle shape visible to the throngs of people descending on San Francisco for the annual Pride parade. This year’s pink triangle will be installed on June 7th.
