We have an invitation into the kind of desperation that few people in 21st century Australia know. Every human has many things that ought to elicit desperation, but many of us surround ourselves with sufficient comfort, plus medicate and distract ourselves whenever those sensations emerge.
Luke 18 opens with a parable and closes with a story of miraculous healing. Both of these are incredibly helpful in understanding prayer. In fact, the opening line of Luke 18 is "Now he told them a parable on the need for them to pray always and not give up." Both the parable and miracle show the fruit of desperate prayer.Preached by Shane Rayner

Human like Elijah
Focusing on James 5:13-18, Shane steps us through the implications of the words, "Elijah was a human being as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the land. Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the land produced its fruit."
We look in more detail at Elijah's story to see the good news that Jesus has for any who doubt, get depressed or intimidated. What God did through Elijah is a taste of what He wants to do through us. So often we limit what God can do. What would happen if we really believed that we are human like Elijah?
