In this episode, we break down the unfolding crisis in Washington, D.C.
President Trump declared a “crime emergency” under Section 740 of the D.C. Home Rule Act, federalizing the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and activating the National Guard—despite reports that crime is at historic lows.
Attorney General Pam Bondi appointed DEA Administrator Terry Cole as “Emergency Police Commissioner,” stripping authority from MPD Chief Pamela Smith. Sanctuary city protections were rescinded, and new demands for immigration enforcement were imposed.
On the ground, more than 150 arrests, removal of homeless encampments, and checkpoint deployments have raised alarms among immigrant and civil liberties groups.
Activists are organizing protests, sometimes using coded terms like “music festivals” to evade censorship.
Opinions are divided: some hail these moves as a necessary crackdown, while others warn of authoritarian overreach with serious implications for D.C.’s autonomy and its most vulnerable communities.
