From Plants to People: Connections in Landscape Architecture

This week, host Forrestt Williams sat down with Nick Straabe, a specifications manager in Hunter Industries' Southern California region, to talk about the importance of networking in the ever-changing world of landscape architecture. The two delved into Nick's early background, which saw his desire to design golf courses inspire him to study landscape architecture and pursue a career in the field before a recession put him on a path to his current role with the irrigation heavyweight (and longtime Land F/X manufacturer partner). Nick discussed how his approach to networking helped him land what he never could have predicted would be his dream job, then provided some valuable insights into how aspiring professionals can make, and make the most of, industry connections to help them grow in their field.

Tool or Takedown? A.I. in Landscape Architecture

Host Forrestt Williams sat down with Land F/X CEO Jeremiah Farmer to discuss the present and potential roles played by A.I. in the landscape architecture world. While acknowledging the fears surrounding A.I. – some valid and some admittedly far-fetched – the conversation juxtaposed A.I. with the automation of tedious tasks that served as the impetus for the founding of Land F/X. We learned what some power Land F/X users are doing with A.I. in their daily lives, while also hearing about the prospects of workforce reduction and other possible drawbacks expressed by others. Jeremiah made a reassuring case that tech has a long way to go in replacing human designers in the creation of permit-ready sites. Sit down for a nuanced and realistic look at where A.I. might take us, and where it might not.

Psychoacoustics

Forrestt and Alex from Land F/X sat down to nerd out about psychoacoustics, which is just a fancy term for understanding how our brains handle the noise around us. They chatted about how city noise, like traffic and construction, actually stresses us out and can even lead to heart problems. (The cool part: Sounds from natural sources like water and birds counteract those issues, helping body and mind feel better.) They finished off discussing how to design better spaces using living walls and specific trees to make the world sound less, well, annoying.
