Ever wondered what would happen if your group chat got let out in the open?
Welcome to Overserved in the Suburbs, where a single dad and a married mum come together to talk about the stuff we’re all discussing behind closed doors.
Joel and Sarah dive into relationships, parenting, friendships, family drama, life after 40 (even though Joel is not quite there yet and aggressively denied it) pop culture, reality TV and all the wonderfully messy bits of everyday life.
We might come from different perspectives, but we’re here for the same things: a good laugh, an honest conversation and a debate we probably won’t agree on.
He’s Joel. She’s Sarah. Sometimes we’re on the same page. Sometimes we absolutely are not. But whatever the topic, you can expect plenty of opinions, plenty of laughs and no shortage of oversharing.
So pour yourself a drink, pull up a chair and join the conversation. Because around here, no topic is left unopened. Get ready to be OVERSERVED in everything we are discussing this week.
What’s Halloween like in the suburbs? We talk about trick-or-treating, spooky neighbourhoods, and the haunted house Joel once lived in - a real-life ghost story from his own experience.
We also get into the things that scare us as adults, from rising electricity bills to irrational fears. Then Sarah reveals her fear of bananas, sending the conversation in a very unexpected direction.
A Halloween episode about suburban traditions, haunted houses, adult anxieties, and the strange things that frighten us.

S1E11 - The October Canon Event
This week, we’re weighing in on the classic game of Bingo, Kelly Clarkson vs. the Toy Shop, swapping opinions on the fine art of group gifts, and getting into the dos and don’ts of wedding present etiquette. When is a group gift a great idea, and when does it just go overboard? And should you bring a wedding gift when "your presence is our present".
Then we get to our big topic: The October Canon Event. What is it, why is everyone talking about it, and have you experienced one yourself? Tune in for the stories, opinions, and unfiltered debate and tell us what you think.

S1E10 - Plagues, Profiles and Parenting
In episode 10, we’re celebrating 10 episodes of the podcast with the long-awaited return of our old lady words, the listener-favourite segment from episode one. We also catch up on the latest headlines, including a Russian plague case, and swap memories of lockdown and the strange ways it changed how we connect with people.
Things get a little more mysterious as we dive into true crime, including the disturbing Christa Pike case. Plus, we confess to the social media rabbit hole of using burner accounts to peek at people’s profiles and ask the question: when does curiosity become a full-blown stalk?
To finish, we get real about parenting tweens. Sarah opens up about the joys and challenges of raising her son, who has ADHD, and we talk about the big emotions, shifting boundaries and everyday struggles that can come with the tween years. Whether you’re parenting a neurodivergent child or simply trying to survive the pre-teen stage, this honest conversation is for you.
Join us for listener-favourite segments, curious internet habits, true crime and a heartfelt chat about family life. Like, follow and share the episode—and tell us: what’s your go-to old lady word?

Episode 9 - Drama, Dating and Dodgy Destinations
Sarah watched the AFL Grand Final, while Joel only tuned in for Kylie Minogue’s opening performance. Joel shares the horrors of his trip away to Scary Island, gives us a glimpse into his high-school musical era, and Sarah catches up on the latest from the Lindsay Clancy trial. Then Sarah puts Joel in the hot seat with the hard questions about dating as a single dad — before wrapping things up with a chaotic round of Shag, Marry, Throw Over a Cliff.

Episode 8 - Doilies, Dried Flowers and Dirty Movies
On Joel's recommendation, Sarah has been listening to My Dad Wrote a Porno, which naturally leads us into smutty books, questionable film titles, and a very important game: porno or NoNo? Then we take a nostalgic detour through the homes of mothers and grandmothers everywhere - doilies, decoupage, dried flowers, trinkets, and buffets overflowing with dinnerware nobody was ever allowed to use. Stay until the end for Sarah to reveal a real life ghost story and Joel to try a knapper for the first time - a product from his most hated location - ALDI.

Episode 7 - Villains, Visions & Jelly Wrestling
This week, Sarah has some huge news: she’s officially a grandmother! Naturally, we celebrate by spiralling into daytime soap operas, iconic villains and the Traitors finale.
Joel puts Sarah through a very serious and definitely scientific lie detector test, before calling a friend to unpack their former travelling alter egos as jelly wrestlers. Then it’s time for Practical Magic, witchy movies and Sarah’s very real experience with a Ouija board.
As always: absolutely no topic is safe in the suburbs. Pour yourself something and join us. 🍷

S1 Mini Episode - Bloopers
A special mini episode to make up for a week gap between episodes. Go behind the scenes in The Suburbs to hear some of our bloopers, gafs and outtakes - moments that were never able to be shared in our normal episodes.
The language is foul but the banter is prime.

Episode 6 - From The Suburbs to New York
This week on Overserved In The Suburbs, we go from suburban chaos to New York.
We’re talking forgotten pickles, parenting confessions, Joel's hatred of Aldi and all the crazy you have grown to expect from us. But then the conversation takes an unexpected turn when Sarah shares her first-hand experience of being in New York during 9/11, and the life-changing moment that has stayed with her ever since.
A very OITS episode: plenty of laughs, plenty of suburban bullshit, and a story that reminds us that sometimes life can change in an instant.

Episode 5 - Days Of Our Suburban Lives
This week on Overserved In The Suburbs, we’re recording on a Sunday and attempting to piece together what happened on Friday night… because what started as a few quiet wines somehow ended in backyard karaoke.
We’re talking Karen moments, Maccas complaints, when to mind your own business (and when to absolutely get involved), the phenomenon we’re calling “Inserter Alert”, and the ever-escalating nightmare that is fucking Book Week.
Plus: our favourite podcasts, daytime soaps, a special "phone a friend" guest, a surprise game Sarah springs on Joel, and plenty of the usual suburban chaos.
Pour yourself something and join us. 🍷

Episode 4 - Reason, Season and Treason
Friendships, suburban icks and a little bit of treason. 😂
This week we’re talking friendship, tongue twisters, suburban "icks" and why some people are in our lives for a reason, a season or… something else entirely.
Plus houseguests, The Train Theory, Logies chaos, suburban dilemmas and the very important question: would we make good Traitors?
Pour a drink and join us for Reason, Season & Treason. 🥂

Episode 3 - Murder, Mayhem and Making Babies
⚠️ TRIGGER WARNING: This episode discusses true crime, murder, post-natal depression, infertility and IVF. Some topics may be distressing or triggering, so please take care of yourself while listening. We touch on a current true crime case that is currently in trial, while we speculate and commentate on the social media reaction we respect that this is a current case involving real people and do not influence or decide on any outcomes.
🎙️ MICROPHONE DISCLAIMER: The microphones are fighting for their lives at the beginning of this episode. Don’t panic — we fix them midway through. The second half sounds significantly less like we recorded it from inside a handbag.
.......
We’re back, and this week we’re covering The Traitors, true crime, murder, post-natal depression and the big one — infertility and IVF. Basically, we’ve gone from reality TV betrayal to reproductive science with several questionable detours in between.
Pour yourself something, settle in and join us for another wildly unqualified conversation about absolutely everything.
Overserved in the Suburbs — parenting, wine, questionable opinions and now apparently reproductive medicine.

Episode 1 - Lollygagging
In the very first episode, Sarah and Joel settle in, catch up, and embrace the fine art of lollygagging with a bit too much mumbo jumbo! Expect tangents, laughs, and the kind of conversation that feels like hanging out with friends. No rush, no agenda, just a good time.
