Pregnancy, Fertility, and Parenthood: Grieving the Family You Imagined
Sometimes grief is connected not only to what happened, but to what we thought would happen. A child we imagined. A family we pictured. The role of becoming a mother or father. Traditions we thought we would create. A future we could already see in our minds. In Season 2, Episode 4 of the OZZz Podcast, Hoomes explores pregnancy, fertility, parenthood, and what it can mean when the family someone imagined does not happen—or happens very differently than expected. This conversation includes pregnancy loss, infertility, medical uncertainty, wanting children but never finding the right circumstances, choosing not to have children, men and reproductive grief, relationships, family pressure, boundaries, and the difficult questions people sometimes ask about parenthood. Hoomes also makes an important distinction throughout the conversation: Nobody else gets to decide what you are supposed to feel. Not everyone experiences pregnancy, abortion, infertility, reproductive decisions, or not becoming a parent as grief. Some people feel sadness. Some feel anger. Some feel relief. Some feel gratitude. Some experience several emotions together. And some do not describe their experience as grief at all. Your experience belongs to you. This episode also asks what happens when society connects adulthood, success, womanhood, manhood, family legacy, or personal worth too closely to becoming a parent. Hoomes reminds listeners: “A life that turns out differently is not automatically a lesser life.” Family can take many forms, and a meaningful life does not depend on becoming a parent. Have you ever had to grieve a version of family or parenthood you once imagined for yourself? Grief Is a Journey: Finding Your Path Through Loss Kenneth J. The Grief of Emotional Neglect: Mourning What You Needed but Did Not Receive
What happens when you grow up and realize some of the emotional things you needed were never really there? In Season 2, Episode 3 of the OZZz Podcast, Hoomes explores the grief of emotional neglect — the grief that can surface when affection, encouragement, reassurance, emotional safety, or simply feeling seen and heard were missing from childhood or from important relationships later in life. Hoomes begins with his own experience. When his parents divorced when he was 15, the love and emotional support he had known changed. At the time, he did not have the words to explain what he was experiencing. Looking back, he recognizes that he was grieving emotionally. The conversation also looks at what Hoomes witnessed as a teacher, why some people become fiercely independent or uncomfortable receiving healthy love, the emotional messages boys are often taught, and what can happen when practical needs are met while emotional needs go unnoticed. He also talks about emotional neglect in adult relationships, the difference between someone’s intention and another person’s experience, boundaries, therapy, faith, self-validation, and accepting that someone may never become the person you needed them to be. One question sits at the center of the episode: Have you ever grieved something you needed emotionally but never received? Sometimes we grieve not only what we lost, but what we never had. Ambiguous Loss: Grieving Without Closure
What happens when something has been lost, but there was never a clear ending? In Season 2, Episode 2 of the OZZz Podcast, Hoomes explores ambiguous loss, the grief that can happen when someone is physically present but emotionally or cognitively changed, or physically absent while still holding an important place in your life. From dementia and changing family relationships to estrangement, unanswered questions, and goodbyes that never happened, Hoomes talks about why some losses are especially difficult to explain. He also shares personal experiences involving his grandmother, his mentor Dr. Eunice Warren Moore, and a relationship that taught him how deeply the absence of a goodbye can stay with you. And as Hoomes puts it, sometimes being understood matters more than being given advice. Reflection Question: Is there a relationship or loss in your life that never gave you a clear ending? Anticipatory Grief: Grieving Before the Loss
Grief does not always begin after something is gone. In the Season 2 premiere of OZZz, Hoomes explores anticipatory grief — the grief that can begin when we know someone or something important is changing before the loss has fully happened. Hoomes talks about aging parents, caregiving, hospice, children leaving home, changing relationships, uncertainty, faith, relief, exhaustion, and the pressure people feel when they are told to “stay strong.” He also shares personal stories about his grandmother, his diagnosis with myasthenia gravis, why he believes in giving people their flowers while they can still enjoy them, and why some losses may never provide the closure we expect. Reflection Question: Have you ever found yourself grieving something before it was actually gone? Season Two: Grief: The Losses We Carry. Learning to Live Forward. Ask OZZz: Your Questions About Sibling Rivalry
Season 1 Finale — Episode 8 After an entire season exploring sibling rivalry, Hoomes OZZz turns the conversation toward real family situations—and toward himself. In the Season 1 finale, Hoomes reflects on what this season brought back from his own childhood, how it changed the way he sees his sisters and family experiences, why he chose to acknowledge his own part in past conflict, and what healing can look like when reconciliation is not the goal. He also responds to real sibling and family situations shared on Reddit involving favoritism, money, jealousy, boundaries, forced sibling closeness, adult resentment, different childhood experiences, and the pressure parents can unintentionally place on children. One lesson comes through again and again: Forgiveness does not automatically mean reconciliation. And sometimes growth is not about restoring a relationship to what it used to be. Sometimes it means understanding the story differently. Season 1 Reflection Question: What has this season taught you about your own family relationships? Season 2 of the OZZz Podcast launches Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
