The story begins on Sunday, April 18, 2027, focusing on an older man named Hannes who hosts a small, unregistered church of twelve people in his garage. After a national state of disaster is declared due to fuel shortages and riots, regulations are passed that prohibit unregistered gatherings of more than ten people. Hannes is arrested by young police constables for violating the emergency regulations and is taken to court. A magistrate sentences him to detention at Robben Island, a former world heritage museum that has been rapidly repurposed as an emergency holding facility for political and regulatory prisoners.
While imprisoned, Hannes asks a guard named Sipo Ndlovu for permission to pray at the island's old lime quarry. While praying alone at the quarry, he experiences a profound divine vision that directly mirrors the biblical Book of Revelation. Hannes hears a voice like a trumpet declare, "I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last," and witnesses a divine figure holding seven stars amidst seven golden lampstands. Commanded to document his apocalyptic vision, Hannes begins writing the revelation down on obsolete Department of Correctional Services prison forms provided by the guard.
