The Mental Game: Why Tactics Mean Nothing If Your Head Isn't Right
In this episode of Padel Up: Intermediate to Advanced, host Jack Mercer tackles one of the most overlooked aspects of competitive padel: the mental game. If you are an intermediate or advanced padel player who knows the tactics but struggles to execute them under match pressure, this episode is essential listening. Jack explores the performance paradox, the well-documented sports psychology principle that explains why overthinking disrupts skilled execution, and what you can do to get out of your own way on court. You will learn why building a consistent pre-point routine is one of the highest-return habits you can develop as a padel player, and how it works as a psychological anchor to help you compete with focus and confidence. The episode also dives into the concept of emotional recovery after errors, explaining why the ability to reset quickly is a trainable skill that separates consistent competitors from players who spiral under pressure. Jack introduces the fifteen-second rule, a practical technique for letting go of bad points and returning your attention to the next rally. Finally, Jack breaks down the difference between self-judgement and neutral self-observation, and why the way you talk to yourself during a match directly affects how freely and aggressively you are able to play. Whether you are preparing for a local tournament or simply trying to be more consistent in social matches, the mental strategies covered in this episode will help you bridge the gap between what you know and what you actually do when it counts. Breaking the Middle: How to Exploit the Most Vulnerable Zone on Court
In this episode of Padel Up: Intermediate to Advanced, host Jack Mercer dives deep into one of the most underutilised tactics in the game: attacking the middle of the court. Whether you're competing in club leagues or pushing toward tournament play, understanding how to exploit the central zone is a game-changer that separates good players from great ones. Jack breaks down exactly why the middle is so dangerous for your opponents, covering the geometry of court positioning, the psychology of doubles communication, and the split-second hesitation that the middle ball creates. You'll learn when to target the centre, how to use the middle volley at the net, when to deploy the central lob, and how to use mid-court drives to transition forward effectively. This episode also covers the defensive side of the equation, including how to protect the middle as a pair with clear pre-match communication and smart positioning adjustments. Key topics covered in this episode include padel doubles tactics, attacking the middle in padel, court geometry and positioning, net play strategy, the middle lob technique, defending the central zone, and communication between padel partners. Whether you've been defaulting to corners out of habit or you simply haven't considered the middle as a primary weapon, this episode will shift your perspective and give you practical tools to apply immediately in your next match. The Wall Is Your Ally: Turning Defense Into Instant Attack
In this episode of Padel Up: Intermediate to Advanced, host Jack Mercer breaks down one of the most transformative concepts in padel strategy: using the back wall not as a defensive last resort, but as a launching pad for aggressive, point-winning shots. Jack covers the essential mindset shift that separates intermediate players from advanced competitors, explaining why the back wall actually gives you time rather than taking it away. He walks through the technical fundamentals of positioning and footwork when reading balls off the glass, highlighting the most common mistake of crowding the wall and how to fix it. The episode dives deep into shot selection from the back third of the court, including a detailed look at the back wall vibora, how to execute a purposeful tactical lob versus a desperate floater, and how to read and respond to the challenging three-wall scenario where the ball catches both the back and side glass. Jack also addresses the often-overlooked doubles communication element, explaining how clear partner communication when the ball heads into a back corner can be the difference between conceding easy points and turning defence into attack. Whether you are working on your padel back wall technique, trying to improve your padel shot selection under pressure, or developing smarter padel doubles tactics, this episode delivers practical, court-ready advice you can apply immediately. Two Steps Ahead: How Advanced Players Think Between Points
In this episode of Padel Up: Intermediate to Advanced, host Jack Mercer explores one of the most overlooked aspects of high-level padel: the mental game between points. While many intermediate players use the time between rallies purely for physical recovery, advanced padel players are running a deliberate and disciplined thought process that sets them up to win the next point before it even begins. Jack breaks down three core habits that elite padel players consistently apply between points. The first is the read and reset, a technique for extracting one clean tactical insight from the previous point and then resetting both mindset and body language to stay composed. The second is pattern recognition, the ongoing process of cataloguing opponent tendencies and using that information to create small, directional intentions that build pressure throughout a match. The third is partner communication, the brief but high-value exchanges between doubles partners that keep both players aligned and thinking as a single strategic unit. This episode also addresses the difference between productive mental habits and counterproductive overthinking, explaining how consistent practice of these skills leads to natural, automatic awareness rather than mental overload. A practical between-points drill is also included to help intermediate players begin building these habits in their training matches. Whether you are working toward competing at a higher club level or simply want to feel more in control during matches, this episode gives you the mental framework to start thinking like an advanced padel player. The Vibora Unpacked: Spin, Timing and When to Pull the Trigger
In this episode of Padel Up: Intermediate to Advanced, host Jack Mercer takes a comprehensive look at the vibora, one of padel's most powerful and technically demanding shots. Whether you are an intermediate player trying to add the vibora to your arsenal or an advanced player looking to sharpen your decision making, this episode covers everything you need to know. Jack breaks down the mechanics of the vibora in clear, practical terms, explaining how the combination of topspin and sidespin creates the distinctive kicking trajectory that makes this shot so difficult to handle. He walks through the brushing contact technique, the importance of a diagonal swing path, and why trusting the racket face is key to generating consistent spin. Timing is a central focus of the episode. Jack explains why preparation must happen before the ball hits the glass, how to identify the right contact height in your strike zone, and why patience is the hidden ingredient behind a truly explosive vibora. Footwork gets its own dedicated section, with Jack describing the fencing-style stance that loads hip and shoulder rotation for maximum power and spin transfer through the shot. Perhaps most valuably, Jack tackles the tactical side of the vibora: when to pull the trigger, which court situations create the best opportunities, and how to choose between cross-court and down-the-line targets to maximise your effectiveness. This episode is essential listening for any padel player serious about developing an attacking back-court game. Pressure Without Power: Why Touch Players Beat Hard Hitters
In this episode of Padel Up: Intermediate to Advanced, host Jack Mercer breaks down one of the most misunderstood dynamics in padel: why touch players consistently outperform hard hitters, even at intermediate and advanced levels. If you've been working on generating more power in your padel game, this episode will challenge that approach and show you why variation, deception, and racket feel are the true foundations of high-level play. Jack explains how the walls in padel fundamentally change the value of raw pace, and why a soft, well-placed shot creates far more pressure than a powerful drive. Topics covered in this episode include: Why power works against you in padel compared to tennis, how touch creates multiple problems for your opponent simultaneously, the mental pressure of variation versus pace, a practical drill to develop your touch game immediately, how to remove telegraphing from your shot preparation, and how to use power selectively for maximum impact. This episode is perfect for padel players rated between three and four stars who are looking to make the jump to advanced club level. Whether you play in a social league, compete in local tournaments, or are working with a coach on your padel development, the tactical concepts in this episode apply directly to your game. The Lob Is Not a Weakness: How to Use Height as a Weapon
In this episode of Padel Up: Intermediate to Advanced, host Jack Mercer breaks down one of the most underestimated shots in the game: the lob. Far from being a defensive fallback, the lob is a tactically powerful weapon that can shift momentum, disrupt rhythm, and force opponents out of dominant net positions. Jack explains the critical difference between a panic lob and an intentional, well-placed lob, and walks listeners through exactly when and how to use height as an offensive tool on the padel court. Topics covered in this episode include the ideal trajectory and placement for an effective lob, how to target the opponent's backhand overhead, the mechanics of grip and swing path for a clean lob, the topspin lob and why it creates problems for attackers, and using the lob as a tempo disruptor during long competitive rallies. Jack also covers the situations where lobbing is a poor choice and how to avoid common mistakes that turn a potentially great shot into an easy opportunity for your opponents. Whether you're looking to add variety to your game, neutralise aggressive net players, or develop a more complete tactical approach, this episode gives you practical, actionable insights you can take straight to the court. Stop Guessing, Start Seeing: Pattern Recognition on the Padel Court
In this episode of Padel Up: Intermediate to Advanced, host Jack Mercer breaks down one of the most underrated skills in competitive padel: pattern recognition. If you've ever felt like you're always one step behind on court, reacting instead of anticipating, this episode is for you. Jack explains why intermediate padel players often get stuck reacting to the ball rather than reading the game ahead of time, and how advanced players build a mental library of repeating shot sequences that allows them to move and position before the ball is even struck. Topics covered in this episode include how to trace points backwards to identify high probability shot chains, smart positioning during defence to offence transitions, net position adjustments based on opponent ball location, understanding glass wall rebound trajectories and how to use them to your advantage, and a practical shadow pattern drilling exercise you can do with your partner today. Whether you play social padel or compete in club tournaments, developing your pattern recognition will sharpen your court awareness, reduce errors, and help you make smarter tactical decisions under pressure. Reading the Room: How to Anticipate Your Opponent's Next Shot
In this episode of Padel Up: Intermediate to Advanced, host Jack Mercer dives deep into one of the most valuable and often overlooked skills in padel: anticipation. If you've ever watched a high-level player move into position before the ball has even left their opponent's racket and wondered how they do it, this episode is for you. Jack breaks down the key visual cues that give away your opponent's next shot, including foot position, body orientation, shoulder rotation, and backswing height. He explains how court position narrows or expands a player's shot selection and how you can use that information to make smarter, faster decisions during a rally. The episode also covers the importance of recognising player tendencies and patterns, building a mental profile of your opponents during a match so you can begin to predict their behaviour under pressure. Jack explains why the split step is the essential physical component that connects reading to reacting, and why skipping it undermines even the best anticipation instincts. Listeners will also learn about peripheral awareness, how elite players use soft-eye focus to track both the ball and their opponent's body simultaneously, and how to train this skill with targeted drills and video analysis. This episode is essential listening for intermediate and advanced padel players who want to level up their court intelligence, improve their positioning, and start winning points before they're even played. Own the Net: Positioning Secrets That Advanced Players Never Talk About
In this episode of Padel Up: Intermediate to Advanced, host Jack Mercer breaks down the net positioning strategies that elite padel players rely on but rarely discuss openly. If you've been working on your volleys and overhead smashes but still feel like you're getting exposed at the net, this episode is the missing piece. Jack covers the concept of the pressure triangle and why your distance from the net should never be static. You'll learn why shadowing the ball as a pair is one of the most underrated team habits in doubles padel, and how to use your split step timing at the net to dramatically improve your reaction speed. The episode also dives into the strategic role of the non-dominant player during cross-court exchanges, explaining how creeping toward the centre creates invisible pressure that changes what your opponents can attempt. Jack then breaks down the difference between a panicked lob retreat and a controlled, intentional retreat that sets up your next attacking opportunity. Finally, Jack shares a practical tip on reading opponent body language, specifically shoulder positioning, to help you anticipate shot direction before the ball is even struck. Whether you're playing at club level or working toward competitive tournament padel, these positioning insights will sharpen your court awareness and help you take control of the net with confidence and intention. The Third Shot Problem: When to Attack and When to Reset
In this episode of Padel Up: Intermediate to Advanced, host Jack Mercer breaks down one of the most critical decision points in padel — the third shot. Whether you are moving from intermediate to advanced play or looking to sharpen your tactical understanding, this episode gives you a clear framework for knowing when to attack and when to reset. Jack explains why the third shot is uniquely challenging in padel compared to other racket sports, and why the serving team consistently starts from a position of disadvantage. He outlines the specific conditions that justify an attacking third shot, including short returns, slow balls, and high setups that allow you to take the initiative. He also explores why attacking at the wrong moment hands control back to the opposition. Equally important is the discussion around the reset — a shot that is often misunderstood as purely defensive but is, in fact, a high-level tactical tool. Jack reframes the reset as an intentional play that controls tempo, buys time for court positioning, and denies the net team the fast-paced exchange they are looking for. Key topics covered in this episode include reading the quality of the return, partner positioning and communication, using patience as a strategic weapon, and the mental shift required to move from reactive defending to intentional resetting. Whether you play socially at a competitive level or are preparing for club tournaments, the insights in this episode will help you make smarter decisions at one of the most important moments in every padel point. Why Your Smash Is Killing Your Game: Choosing Between the Bandeja and Vibora
In this episode of Padel Up: Intermediate to Advanced, host Jack Mercer tackles one of the most common mistakes that holds intermediate padel players back from reaching the next level — over-relying on the power smash instead of developing a strategic overhead game. If your smashes are sending you to the back of the court, costing you points, or leaving you out of position, this episode is exactly what you need. Jack breaks down two of the most essential overhead shots in padel — the bandeja and the vibora — explaining what makes each one unique, when to use them, and how to practise them effectively. Learn why the bandeja, or tray shot, is the foundation of a controlled overhead game, and how its slice and sidespin mechanics allow you to stay at the net and maintain an attacking position. Discover how the vibora, with its sharper spin and aggressive ball behaviour off the glass, can become a powerful point-ender when the conditions are right. This episode covers grip technique, contact points, swing paths, footwork, and the mental decision-making process that separates good padel players from great ones. Jack also discusses why mastering the bandeja must come before attempting the vibora under match pressure, and how drilling these shots separately leads to smarter, faster on-court decisions. Whether you play socially or competitively, understanding the difference between the bandeja and vibora will transform your overhead game and help you keep control of the net. Subscribe to Padel Up: Intermediate to Advanced for weekly strategy, technique, and tactical advice designed specifically for improving padel players.
